Pipeline/Heron Rookery Walk
Sunday, March 17th at 1pm
This is an easy, scenic walk/hike and the Great Blue Heron’s have arrived back to their nests on the James River. March is reported to be the peak viewing season. We will start at the 22nd Street parking lot on Riverside Drive to the Buttermilk Trail, go down the steps to the footbridge to Belle Isle. Once on the Island we will climb to the top for some amazing views of the city. Walk around the Island and footbridge and head east to Browns Island, over the pipeline past the Heron Rookery stopping for photo ops. Once we have climbed the ladder to the floodwall we will head to Bottoms Up Pizza for a bite to eat and a cold one. After lunch we will walk over the Mayo Bridge and once on the south side we will head west to the top of the floodwall, walk under the Manchester Bridge and back to the parking lot on 22nd Street.
This is a fun and easy walk and suited for all fitness levels. Children are welcome but due to our lunch plans, no pets please. Hope for sunny weather!
Total distance is a little over 5 miles. Mostly flat with a few hills. Paved and dirt trails. There is one ladder to climb at the end of the pipeline. You can avoid that section if you have an issue climbing and walk along the floodwall but you will miss the Heron Rookery.
