Winter day hike - Frozen Waterfalls White Oak/Cedar Run Canyon

White Oak Canyon - Cedar Run frozen water falls

The falls are "actually" frozen.
First picture was take this pass Sunday.
Second picture showing how they normally look.

White Oak Falls is one of the larger waterfalls in Shenandoah National Park.
This trail boasts as series of 6 major drops of varying heights along with countless small drops over a mile stretch with the uppermost fall being the highest.  The first big drop is the most impressive, being nearly 90 feet high and having excellent views.

Seeing all the falls is an arduous hike, but well worth it.
It is a long uphill climb, but at least the trip back is down hill. It is a steep down hill, and by no means easy.

Cedar Run falls
Not very long, this down and back hike can still be somewhat of a workout as you gain 1,500 ft on the way back in on If you make the hike in the early spring.
Cedar Run should be flowing with several beautiful ponds and small waterfalls. The main falls at the base of the hike have a great natural water slide and there is a small swimming hole about 40 yards beyond it, but in combination of White Oak falls it became an 8 mile hike full of beauty.

A lot of people don't realize it, but this middle waterfall is the main waterfall on Cedar Run trail, not the upper waterfall which is known as 'the slide'. On this trail, you will be in true wilderness. When water levels are sufficient, there are many outstanding miniature waterfalls and cascades to be viewed during this hike. Cedar Run has 3 waterfalls: upper, middle and lower. This middle waterfall is located about 200 yards or so below 'the slide'. There is no actual trail to this waterfall, although it does pass fairly close to the head of it. It is not easily seen from the trail when the trees have leaves and/or water levels are low. However, someone has tied a piece of white cloth around a tree to signal its location, but that could be removed at any point in time by anyone.

This waterfall flows downward over a narrow rocky gorge into a pool below. The best view of this waterfall is down at the base where the pool is. Getting down to the pool requires a good amount of effort, there is no trail. This waterfall is the more pleasing of the three falls on Cedar Run trail, but not as well documented in publications as the upper (slide) and lower falls are.

In a normal day of fall/spring this hike is considered a moderate level with only 8 mile length but over 2450' gain in elevation but now in full winter the parameter change, this will be a "very strenuous" hike because all the ice on the trail which is mostly rocks.

Does anyone know for sure if we will need micro-spikes, which I don't have? The weather is calling for snow and I don't want to take a spot if others are more prepared. If not, I can drive up to 4 in my car.
