Spring Into Summer at Assateague Island

  • Jun 26, 2010 · 12:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

UPDATE:SOLD OUT.
If you ask me what one of my favorite trips with this group is, then I'd probably have to say our beach camping at Assateague Island from 2 years ago. We are bringing it back for the early summer. The weather is bearable during this time at the beach and makes for great conditions. Roughly high 80s. Not too hot and not too cool either.
Imagine....group bonfire, cookout, kayaking/canoeing nearby, midnight swimming with a beer in hand, horses roaming the beaches, sleeping in your tent with an ocean breeze and the sound of the waves crashing only a 100 yards away. That's beach camping at
Assateague. The event is only sold out when I mark it as such as the top of the writeup. Assateague is a 3 hour drive from DC. It is roughly 30 minutes south of Ocean City
ITINERARY -arrive Saturday morning, - grilling and cookout -canoeing, swimming, and kayaking in the daytime or just chill. -saturday night campfire and cookout party -you can stay till Sunday or Monday. Sunday checkout is 10:30am so if you plan to stay later than that, please pay the additional $10 regardless if you are staying for Sunday night. Check-in time is 12 noon This is BYOB and food. I will bring some meat to grill but cannot provide for everyone so bring something to share as well. Check in at the oceanside group campsite. There is only 1 group campsite. Will provide checkin details as the date draws closer.
WHAT TO BRING FOR BEACH CAMPING? It's not too different from camping in the woods. See this
checklist of what to bring Please consider carpooling as there are only so many parking spots nearby.
Carpooling options Please list if you can drive or wish to be driven and from where. Please list that in the comments box on the left hand side where it says, "talk about this meeting." Don't list it in the RSVP section as it'll be hard for people to respond to. As a courtesy, we only ask that you pay the driver a few dollars for gas money due rising gas prices nowadays. If you're looking for a ride, be proactive by emailing people who are volunteering rather than waiting for people to email you.
REFUND POLICY: No refunds and event goes on in the event of rain.
DIRECTIONS GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude): [masked], -75.2 Follow US RT. 50 east to MD RT. 611 south. Proceed over Verrazano Bridge. Take first right onto BayBerry Drive. Continue 2-1/4 miles to entrance station. Pay entrance fee. Take second left to ranger office to register and check in.

People are very fun, professional, and sharing. This was first time I joined a meetup event. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. Hope to do it again soon!

Good times, and a good hanging out with all of you!. It was really hot, but that's not your fault, Dean.

    Everyone,
I had a great time too...

    1) Black canvas bag -> I have it. It was being "investigated" by some horses when I came back from breakfast.
    2) I also have a grill scraper (metal brush) and a long grill spatula with wooden handle. The horses ignored them.
    3) Conversely, I lost my small kitchen spatula with black handle, who has it?

Philip left a black and white thick canvas bag with bocce
balls at the group site. Did anyone pick it up?

had a complete blast with everyone. thanks for coming out. the evening campfire shenanigans were fun as always. I'm just sorry i wasn't there for the streaking and skinny dipping that apparently went on or did it, Rich? :-0

Hey everybody...check out the "Assateague - who can bring what" thread on the message board and make a suggestion on what to contribute..let's not leave it all up to Dean!

    June 25, 2010

  • H. D.

I just need someone to bring a CD boombox (with batteries) so I can pop in an 80s track around the bonfire. I don't mind any tomfoolery that goes on but please don't do anything that wakes up the neighboring groupsite or gets the ranger to come in. State park rangers have no problem kicking an entire group out.

Anyone interested in riding up Friday evening, or Saturday morning, then heading back to DC/VA/MD on Monday? I'm leaving from Arlington and can pickup wherever along the way. I'm driving solo at the moment, and have room for a couple people comfortably, and possibly a third. I've also got quite a bit of camping equipment, sleeping bags, etc. depending on what you need. Send me an email.

    June 22, 2010

  • Justin

Joseph, I like you're idea! I know in the past, Dean has put together a pretty nice spreadsheet (for Park City). Maybe someone can put one together with where everyone is driving from, and/or if they need a ride, and we can hammer down exactly what to bring so we don't forget anything and we're not all taking trips to the store when we get there. Good idea!

Down to a couple of days before party weekend-
how about we start a list of what people can
volunteer to bring to share...eats, beer, music, whatever..for the meetup?

Hey folks, I am leaving from Bethesda on Thursday around noon and am coming back Sunday evening. I can give rides. Also, does someone want my Sunday night spot? I will not be using it.

Victor--Hi this is Joseph...you have your site blocked to email....
I think there is a limit of two tents for the individual campsites and
Jassem already has plans to also stay at the site until monday..when were you planning on leaving?

  • Jassem

I'm looking to share a site and getting a ride over from the DC area, and would be glad to share the cost. If anyone can do either, or both, let me know. I'll be leaving Monday, and can go Fri or Sat. Thanks!

  • Leila

Joe can I chip in and share your Saturday night campsite with you?

    March 30, 2010

  • Jassem

Hey Neeraj, thanks, that sounds good. Let me know when your plans firm up on the days your staying, though, and we can figure it out.

I forgot to mention that I also have 2 extra sleep bags/pads in case anyone wants to use them.

    Hi Jassem,

So far I plan on driving Saturday afternoon and back on Monday. But that is tentative....

    March 26, 2010

  • Jassem

Got a spot for Sunday but I want to stay Saturday too. I've got a tent that fits 3 (1 spot for me and two others). The deal is I need a ride from anywhere that's metro accessible, and I'd be happy to share gas money. Anyone wanting to drive up Saturday and come back on Monday? Lemme know.

    March 26, 2010

  • Joe B.

I've got room for 4 others, 1 tent & 1 car at a nearby site (A03) for saturday night only. Driving from L'enfant in DC and have room for 3 if anyone wants a ride. Arriving early saturday leaving late sunday.

    March 17, 2010

  • H. D.

Forgot to mention that Sunday checkout is 10:30am. So if you see yourself just wanting to lounge around on Sunday and leave late, then it's still worth it to just pay the extra money so you have time to just relax before heading back into the city :(

    March 17, 2010

  • H. D.

Please do yourself a favor and try to carpool. The parking lot is only 30 yards away from us but it can't accommodate all the cars for all 5 groupsites. I know there is another parking lot which is slightly further away. And try to share tents if possible. Gives us more space to roam :) Also, does anyone have a canopy?

I will need a ride with someone driving. I wish to consider staying over Sunday night and returning Monday as its quite a drive (and the beach/camping at Assateague is just too amazing) for just 1.5 days.
