INDONESIA: Volcanoes, Beaches & Culture

  • June 14, 2013 · 6:00 AM

This will be a big outdoors adventure as we visit Bali, Lombok, the Gili Islands and possibly another island east of Lombok.  The trip will consist of trekking up active volcanoes, hitting the beaches and experiencing the food and culture of the islands.

At this time, this trip is now in the planning phase.  The dates will be from June 16, 2013 to July 3, 2013.   The trip will be active as we do one to multi-day volcano trekking (depending on the feasibility of doing so as the volcanoes are active).  A must would include spending time in Bali, Lombok - Gili Islands, and part of Java.  Roughly, this trip will be divided into 3 portions with the possibility for join-in points:

1. Trek Mount Bromo & Ijen Crater (Java), Rinjani 3 day tour (Lombok), Mt. Agung and Mt. Batur (Bali).
2. Visit the Gili Islands
3. Cultural exploration in Ubud, Bali

6/16: Arrive at Kuta, Bali (You can fly in earlier to DPS, Bali if you want to visit places on your own prior to the start of the trip).

6/17: Day 1 of 3 day /2 night Mt. Bromo & Ijen tour

6/18: Day 2 of tour

*6/19: Day 3 of tour; fly Surabaya-Lombok in pm; overnight in Kuta beach or Sengigi, Lombok (option 1)

*6/20: (option 2) Fly from Bali to Lombok; Stay in Kuta or Sengigi free day

6/21: Day 1 of Rinjani trek tour

6/22: Day 2 of Rinjani trek

*6/23: Day 3 of Rinjani trek; get dropped off at the port to take boat to Gili Meno

*6/24: Gili Meno

*6/25:Depart for Gili Trawangan

*6/26: Gili Trawangan

6/27: Gili Trawangan

6/28: Depart for Gili Air

6/29: Gili Air

6/30: Ferry to Bali in pm; Head to Ubud

6/31: Mt. Agung trek

7/1: Mt. Batur trek

7/2: Ubud

7/3: Fly out or you can stay longer

 *Join-in points:

June 19: Meet group in Kuta, Lombok

June 23: Meet group in one of the Gili Islands from June 23 onward.

Accommodation style:
We will be staying in low-budget accommodations (not luxury) as part of the adventure.

International Flight- You will be responsible for booking your own flight to DPS (Bali) from DC area.  Flights can go from $900 and up.  You can fly earlier to Bali (DPS) if you wish and then just meet the group at the designated hotel in Kuta on June 16, 2013.  You also can leave sooner if you wish from the Gili Islands (it's easy to take the boat from there to Bali to catch your flight; you can also fly out from Lombok).

IMPORTANT RE: Domestic Flight- hold off on buying your domestic flights as this portion is still being finalized.

There are 2 possibilities:

1. We may end up doing Bromo trek with Bali as starting point and Surabaya as ending point.  In this case, you would need to book a domestic flight from Surabaya to Lombok for June 19.  The flight has to be after 2pm.

2. However, there is a chance we can do bromo trek starting and ending in Bali. In this case, we'll have to just fly from Bali to Lombok directly.  I will have to look further into which options would be best for everyone.

As we want to maximize our adventure in Indonesia, we are booking tours for the following treks:

a. 3 day Mount Brom & Ijen Crater tour

b. Rinjani 3 day trek

c. Day tour of Mt. Agung

d. Day tour of Mt. Batur or just transport to and from

Trip Style:

This is an active outdoorsy trip that requires you to be flexible and adventuruous at heart.  You must have a budget-style/backpacker type of attitude.  We will not be staying in anything luxurious as we will be on the go and enjoying various activities during the day.  On Gili Islands & Ubud, people have options to do what they want (snorkel/dive/lazying etc).  There are diving/snorkel operators on Gili Islands and it's likely you can book these tours when we get to the Islands or you can decide to book the dives ahead of time with the accommodation we're staying at.  This can be discussed further.

Hiking Ability:  Hiking up volcanoes will be strenuous so you're required to be in good shape and have some experience doing strenuous day hikes (at least an elevation gain of 2500 feet and more).  Volcano hiking IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

I am still finalizing pricing for the trekking tours but 3 day Rinjani trek would be around $270 and up and cost will depend on the size of the group.  The cost is more or less the same for the Bromo & Ijen tour.  I'm aiming for hotel stay of around $30 but likely to be more in the touristy areas such as Gili, Ubud etc...

*** The above costs are estimates.  Final prices will depend on time of booking, availability and group size.

Other costs:

Dives & snorkel trips, meals, transfers to and from airports, boat rides in Gili, transfer from port of Bali (Padang Bai) to Ubud.

Want updates?

If you wish to get updates on this trip, RSVP YES.  At some point, I will revise this posting to include more specifics on the itinerary and logistics.  However, at this point, it doesn't hurt to start reseaching flights as this trip is 6 months away. is a good sight to find cheap flights.

Hi, all. Just wanted to check up on those who are seriously joining us on this trip. Please be mindful that it's a must to buy your ticket now from WAS to Denpansar, Bali or you can choose to fly to Singapore/Hongkong and get a cheap airfare via Air Asia. If you have questions, email me. Also, we will be flying from Surabaya to Lombok which is the domestic flight that you would also need to book for June 19.

you can find cheapest accommodation through. You can stay at a local family's house instead of a hotel.

Also, hold off on booking "domestic" flights w/in Indonesia as the itinerary regarding Bromo multi day trek is yet to be finalized. Depending on the route we take, we may have to book Surabaya-Lombok or Bali-Lombok flight.

Hi, all. Just a reminder that the dates were changed slightly. You would need to get to Bali on June 16 at the latest. The Bromo multi day trek starts on July 17. Please note our get together is on Sunday, March 10 at 7:30 pm. There's a separate invite for that...see my posting below for the link. If you plan to come, please make sure to RSVP so I know. It's less than 3.5 months away so flights must be booked rather soon if you are serious about going. Email me if you have questions.

I've done all these hikes also if you have any questions. From Gili or Flores you can probably tack on a 2 day trip to the Komodo Islands and Rinca with an overnight on a boat and snorkling since you're in the area anyway. Komodo area has some of the best snorkling and the boat ride is awesome.

Hey, by the way-- Ubud is IN Bali... LOL (*I have worked in that part of the world and I speak very fluent Indonesian, Balinese, Javanese, and several other dialects in that region... feel free to PM me if anyone has any questions)

    December 14, 2012

    • DMtrekker

Thanks... yes, Ubud is in Bali. I threw it in there along the lines of spots to visit as people are familiar with it but not sure where it is exactly. I'll keep you in mind if we have questions.

Rinjani is a truly world class hike... but if you plan to hike Mt. Bromo, you shouldn't forget Mt. Tengger and Mt. Semeru, those treks are fantastic! You would love visiting Yogyakarta as well.
