A Night of Adult Sledding

I was thinking how fun it would be to get together on a Friday after work and do a night of adult sledding! Last year a friend and I did it, with a bottle of wine, and we had a blast. We could bring along a couple nalgene's of wine and maybe a few of those fancy plastic wine glasses haha (or just drink right out of your own nalgene). Location to be determined and date and time are flexible! I set it far enough in advance to make sure we have some good snow coverage.  Please bring a sled as I don't have any for people to borrow!  We will be at Russian Jack, I'll be scoping out a more specific location in the next couple days.

Does anybody want to repeat this event? sounds Awesome!

      I want to!

Yup, I was definitely planning on repeating the sledding we had a really good time! I'll keep an eye on the weather and figure out a good day to have it.

For those of you who didn't come last night, next time please try to un-RSVP if you realize you're not going to make it to an event! Out of a 60 person sign up only like 15 of us showed up. It's just good for the event organizer to know about how many people they need to look out for. Nice to meet everyone who came last night it was fun!

Yay!!! I'm excited...this will be my first meet-up with this group. I will just look for the big group with sleds. I look forward to meeting new people :D

Hey everyone head to 1600 Lidia Selkregg Ln, Anchorage, AK 99508. The sledding hill is behind the big muni building at the end of the road. There are a few kids and their parents here so remember to be respectful of them. No glass on the hill, put your drinks in another container!

I have yet to commit to a young, social, & energetic meet up. I was wondering if dogs are welcome? I have an awesome, energetic , and well behaved Border Collie who is actually 77.... I'm aware that's not exactly young however, he loves wine and snow and I'm pretty sure he'd have a great time. If by chance he did NOT I suppose I could put him in the truck.

    December 14, 2013

    • Sarah ".

I don't really know the rule on dogs in the park but I'm guessing if they are allowed you would probably have to have him leashed, probably mostly because this hill is right beside a cross country ski area.

      December 17, 2013

    • Danielle

I went last weekend with my sisters and they had a dog sled team there giving the kids rides! and lots of puppies. Seems to not be a problem at all.

  • Curtis P.

If fires are allowed/tolerated there then everyone should bring some fire wood and we can have a fire that way people can go back and forth from sledding to the fire and get warm

    December 16, 2013

    • Sarah ".

I'm going to assume that they probably don't allow fires with this being inside the state parks area.

We currently have a ridiculous total of 59 people signed up for this. If even half actually show up, it will still be one of the largest meet-ups ever for this group. Crazy.

Just so you know, there is a sign at Russian Jack Park that says no alcohol allowed, whether there will be any law enforcement there to enforce this is debatable, but figured I'd give you all a heads up

I don't think technically there is a Sledding Hill where Alcohol is allowed that everyone has access to. Though I think it would be cool to do Arctic Valley trip sometime. But we need vehicles to ferry people the whole time. And MPs patrol that hill.

Guess we will see how this goes and go from there.

Glad you moved it as well. It's too icy! Unfortunately I will be leaving for Christmas break on the 20th, so maybe we'll have to go sledding again in the New Year!

    December 6, 2013

    • Sarah ".

Ah bummer Kim! Yeah we'll totally have to go again so you can come next time. =)

      December 6, 2013

  • Sarah ".

Heads up everyone, I know this is last minute but I have decided to push this event back with the icy conditions and lack of snow lately; quite a few of us think the hill is going to be like sledding on an ice luge. With the addition of beverages and trees at the bottom of the hill that could be a bad combo and I don't want anyone to get hurt. I have moved it to the night of Dec 20th. Keep your fingers crossed for snow so we can actually go!

So just so everyone knows, I'm not highly knowledgeable about sledding hills in Anchorage. The only hill I knew of that is open past 9 is Russian Jack so that's why I picked it. I threw out the option of Kincaid because it closes at 9. If people know of a different hill and would rather go there that is totally fine! Michael is correct, there is a sign that says no alcohol but as long as you have it in a non-glass container like a nalgene and no one is acting like a drunk jackass I think we should be fine. The whole point of this meetup is to just go have some fun sledding with a drink or two! It was completely dead when I went there last year and I didn't see any law enforcement. But I totally understand if some of you don't feel comfortable going there and opt to go elsewhere!

    December 3, 2013

    • Sarah ".

Will definitely need to make sure no one goes overboard but I'm hoping we are all adult enough to be able to control ourselves. For those who don't know there are trees you can potentially run into at the bottom of the hill so the combination of trees and too much beverage would be bad. Plus no one should have to be a babysitter for evening! Like you said Brian, we may not be the only people on the hill. I know quite a few of you and know you guys can control yourselves, hopefully the rest of you can be smart about your intake. For those of you looking to have a lot of drinks, maybe hold off and head to a bar afterwards?

      December 3, 2013

    • Michael

Im not familiar with the park. I saw the map on the event. Is that a parking lot. Otherwise, I will probably wander the park till I find the 42 sledding adults, haha.

      December 3, 2013

  • Madeline

Sooo....there's a lot of talk. a lot of talk....has a final location been decided on yet?

    December 1, 2013

    • Sarah ".

Lol Madeline, check out the huge post I put up about Russian Jack. I have to go scope out a more specific area but that's where we'll be going.

      December 2, 2013

    • Madeline

Saw it but a bunch of others too so I wanted to be sure :) thanks for verifying!

      December 2, 2013

  • Sarah ".

According to the Muni site, there is one sled hill at Russian Jack Park off of DeBarr Road & Lidia Selkregg Lane. The hill is behind the Chalet. I've been told there should be hay bails at the bottom of the hill (to avoid sledding into the woods which I did last year haha). They do have restrooms BUT I do not know if they will be open!

    December 2, 2013

  • Sarah "Jaxx" changed the location to Russian Jack Park

    December 2, 2013

  • Sarah ".

Hi everyone, I'm most likely going to change this event to be held at Russian Jack. I did this there last year and no one bothered me and my friend at all; I think we need to have this at a place with the least chance of us getting bothered (especially since people will be having drinks with them). Kincaid closes at 9 so I don't want everyone to have to leave then in case they want to sled later then 9. Also, since there are SO many people signed up for this, if you don't anyone please try to exchange numbers with a few people so you can ensure you find the group that night!

My favourite location to sled is at Service HS. In the event that it is icy, it is mad fun and some sort of ice traction is helpful for getting back up the hill. I will try to round up extra sleds.
