Road trip to Fairbanks?

  • March 22, 2013 · 12:00 PM

I really would really like to go to Fairbanks and see the Ice festival in February/March but I don't feel like driving the full eight hours by myself. Who's up for a road trip with me?

UPDATED (2/15/13):

After meeting with people on Wednesday and doing a little more research, I have altered the plans a bit yet again. Several people mentioned that they would prefer to leave later in the month do to various scheduling conflicts. I checked it out and I was able to find hotel room available for that weekend a bit cheaper, so the 22nd-24th it is. If this is not good for you, sorry, but I will not be changing it again.

We leave on Friday March 22nd. If possible, I hope to round up enough people and leave by noon (or maybe before). But for those that have normal jobs, a second group could leave around 6:00 or so. We currently have 14 people so we would need multiple cars. There is no real reason why we couldn't have an early car and a late car. We would pull into Fairbanks fairly late and get a hotel. We would then spend Saturday and part of Sunday going to Chena Hotsprings and checking out the ice sculptures in Fairbanks. We would then leave Fairbanks around 2:00ish and arrive back in Anchorage well before midnight.

Costs:

I'm figuring the trip will take approximately $100 in gas per vehicle. If we get 4 people per car, that's $25 per person. This could be more or less depending on the car and the amount of people we get. Plus, getting in to the ice festival is $10 and Chena Hotsprings is also $10 for those that want to go.

So far, Sean and I (Brian) have volunteered to drive. Both of us would like to leave earlier. We will probably need a third and maybe fourth driver to volunteer. Who wants to drive?

For the hotel: The Best Western in Fairbanks has at least three rooms available for that weekend and they have a military/government discount that will let me reserve them for a total of $75 a night. Everyone that I have talked to has said that they would prefer to stay cheap so I am planning on putting four people per room. With taxes and fees, it will cost $45/person for both nights.

I will take care of the hotel reservations, but I will need people to pay me ahead of time to make sure that I don't end up losing a couple hundred dollars on this trip. For those that want stay with the group at Best Western, you will need to get me $45 before March 1st. You can call/text me @[masked] to set up a place and time to meet. I will only reserve rooms for the amount of people that give me money ahead of time. If you don't get me the money before March, you are still welcome to join us, but you will have to find your own accommodations.

Repeat: Get me money by March or pay for your room yourself.

I'm debating swinging by REI to rent some snow shoes today $8/day. Is anyone else interested in doing any hiking up there?

    March 21, 2013

    • Stephanie D.

      I would be down

Would it be cheaper to rent them up there for a day as opposed to renting for the weekend down here? Also consider that space may be an issue. My trunk is pretty large, but with all our luggage AND four sets of snowshoes it may get a little tight.

Sorry to change at the last minute! A good friend from college just bought a plane ticket up here for this weekend so we are heading to Girdwood instead. Have fun!

Late leaving people: (i.e. Bill and Kim and anyone else who wants to get me money this weekend): Where and when do you want to leave? I don't care at all, but I'll just get the conversation started for you.

    • Bill S.

I live in south side an work in midtown. I'll be ready to go mid-afternoon. Who is riseing with me? Kim? Jessica? Anyone else?

      March 16, 2013

  • Bill S.

Too bad we can't set up sub-meetings to coordinate carpools & departure times... As well as the specific events & locations in Fairbanks...

Who is in which vehicle, where they are meeting, & what time they are departing ...

    March 11, 2013

    • Brian J.

There is four of us, Sean in the first group. If we need to, I can drive around and pick people up.

      March 12, 2013

    • Sarah ".

I wouldn't be able to meet up anywhere too crazy hilly or icy as I am now driving my own rear wheel drive jeep with only snow tires, had to return the 4-wheel drive studded tire red jeep to it's owners!

  • Jessica D.

Hey Brian! I would like to go and can give you the money later this week. Would you like me to text you to figure out time/location. Also, I would be down to leave at 4:00 like Bill said if that works for people!

    March 11, 2013

    • Brian J.

Jessica, that sounds great. Send a text my way and we'll figure something out.

      March 11, 2013

  • Brian J.

I currently have hotel money from six people-- myself, Kim, Sean, Jaxx, and Stephanie. Bill is also confirmed, but he has his own accommodations figured out. If you still want to go and stay in the hotel with the rest of the group for cheap, call/text me to get me the money. Otherwise, find your own place to stay.

    March 1, 2013

  • Bill S.

I am willing to volunteer to drive for the 2nd group. Although I would prefer to beat the rush hr out of town(4pm?), I understand that depending on who is interested we may have to wait till 6pm. My sedan can easily accommodate 4 people, and it knows the road to fix quite well.

I think your fuel costs are a little low. $120/car is probably a closer estimate.

    February 23, 2013

  • Stephanie D.

Brian let me know where/when I can get you the money. I also would like to carpool with someone and can leave at the early time.

Mini-Meet-up to pass on money: Meet me if you can at 7:00 at Buckaroo Club on Spenard on Wednesday evening. If we can't make it, let me know and we can work something else out. Again, my number is[masked]-1461. Thanks

    • Stacy P.

So, Does that mean you found cabins?

      February 16, 2013

    • Brian J.

Also: I am planning to reserve three rooms once I get the money. That will be enough for 12 people. If more people are interested, they can find their own accommodations. I don't want to be in charge of dealing with that much money.

      February 16, 2013

  • Sarah ".

Thanks for the update Brian, I am so excited to go now this is going to be an awesome trip! I was thinking that it'll probably be easiest for you Brian if we do another quick meetup during this next week or the one after (before March 1st of course) so you can collect money from those who want to do the Best Western thing for sure.

    February 16, 2013

Very good point. I hadn't really thought that whole part through when I posted.

...it was just one of those days, haha

I ran into Richard on chester creek a few nights ago. He is offering to drive, and has room for 3 other people. I also ran into Kevin at the pub run last night, and he's also fully committed to going. I am also fine with driving, if needed. I see the departure time is 6pm on Friday. Would anyone be up for going a few hours earlier (1-3ish) to drive up there when it's light outside? I'm totally fine cramming into a room with several other people, and going to Chena, and the ice carving festival, and whatever else. I tend to be the type that plans things out as they go, so if anyone has anything they really want to do, that's totally fine with me! And speaking on behalf of both Kevin/Richard (I have about 2 hours of friendship history with both, haha), they both say they are committed.

There isn't much going on that weekend, so hotels shouldn't be booked, and Chena won't be a problem ($10), so I don't think reservations will be needed.

I saw someone make a great suggestion a little while back to do a meet-up specifically to discuss plans for this. Shall we? What about this Wednesday, 7pm @ Buckaroo Club located on Spenard right across the street from REI?

I just spent the last 1.5 hrs looking for cabins around Chena but everything I could find was all booked up already. Oh well!

1.5 hrs? I can just see you now, "La la la la la, eating my veggies and searching for cabins." Te he he. =)

Both the springs and the ice park have fees but are fairly nominal. I don't remember exactly how much either is but estimate $10 each and you're covered. Brian, have you checked for sure, the dates for the ice park? Also, hiking around Chena is great but I'd suggest snoeshoes. You can rent them at Chena itself or at REI before leaving. I think a couple hours from Chena and a couple days from REI were pretty comparable in price, depends on what you feel is more convenient.

The Ice festival is running the entire month of March. By the 9th, all the professional stuff will be finished and on display. If we went a later weekend, there would be more Youth and amateur sculptures done, but I'm not going to stress about it.

The current start date is very flexible, in fact I am going to try to get it changed back to an "unknown" date so that we can get a little more discussion be settling on an actual date so that we don't limit participants.

Another option: Alaska Railroad has a package deal during the Winter Festival for $373 that includes taking the train up to Fairbanks and flying back the next day. It would cost more money, but it would be easier and more fun. More info at: http://alaskarailroad.com/OurTrains/AuroraWinterTrain/WinterVacationPackages/IceArtChampionships/tabid/308/Default.aspx

    What do you think?

    January 16, 2013

    • Brian J.

My thought: trains and plans are cool, but I would prefer going cheap. Besides, road trips are fun. Also, if we do decide to go to Chena (which I really want to do) as well as the ice festival we would probably need to stay an extra night which starts to get really expensive with the package.
