Who says that adults can't read Young Adult Fiction?

This group is a "low pressure" book club where we read Young Adult fiction.  It could be books from our childhood that we want to reread or current Young Adult fiction.

From the Kansas City Star article,  "Novels for young adults are reaching more (adult) readers":

"Literature for young adults tends to focus on first experiences and rites of passage, those intense initial exposures to adulthood most of us can likely still recall. First loves, first kisses, first painful interactions with loss and death. For the genre crowd, add to the list 'first dragon ride' and 'first ghost kiss.' Those firsts can be intoxicating and thrilling but also sobering.

Teenagers are looking for honest stories to which they can relate, tales that don’t shy away from the intense and occasionally messy business of entering adulthood — and those experiences aren’t bound by genre.

The intensity of 'firsts' might explain why young adult fiction seems to have such a loyal following among adult readers as well. When so many of this year’s adult fiction offerings read like variations on a theme of emotional impotence, is it any wonder readers are turning to young adult for spellbinding stories and authentic connection?"

Young Adult (YA) lit is perfect for people who may be

  • too busy to read
  • find reading difficult
  • don't enjoy reading long books
  • are looking for a light read

The reason YA lit is great for the above is that the chapters are short, are usually ~300 pages and larger print and they're just easy, relaxing reads.

While book clubs tend to be "women only", I've opened this group to include anyone who has an interest in reading about Young Adult fiction since some of the books have an appeal to both genders.
