Beat the Monday blues! SOUL food & grooves at FARMERBROWN

Young Blacks of the Bay presents
The mixUP
as featured in The Oakland Tribune,
The Contra Costa Times, and more

at farmerbrown

Only on Mondays at farmerbrown:
$5 DRINKS. $10 DINNERS. LIVE beats.

"Sounds flipped, dipped, and fried
by the one and only DJ MANNY BLACK.
Come get it."

Although we had to cancel last month's mixUP event, you still get a chance to experience farmerbrown with YBB! Now is your time to extend your weekend and beat the Monday blues with a large serving of SOUL.

At our monthly mixUPs, the goal is to meet new friends, network, and support local black businesses while we enjoy delicious cuisine. So, JOIN US!

Your payment of only $11 for this event covers the base price* of your meal plus Meetup transaction fees (we're charging in advance to prevent no-shows, which have been no fun). Don't worry, full refunds are available if you cancel at least 24 hours in advance.

Very special thanks to YBB member Eboni S. of farmerbrown for helping to set-up this opportunity :).

About the mixUP
Origins of The mixUP lie in a conversation about Meetup between myself and an awesome member during a YBB event:

Peta: "...We went to their...mixup?"
Me: "Hmmm, you mean the mixer?"
Peta: (laughs) "Yes, yes..."
Me: (laugh) "Yeah, meetup + mixer...makes sense."
Lightbulb clicks on in my head three hours later.

The mixUP is YBB's initiative to uplift the local black community by networking while we dine at local black-owned restaurants. According to my recent study** (to utilize my sociology degree), severe awkwardness and/or panic attacks resulting from networking events are drastically reduced by networking while eating soul food.

On a serious note, data from East Bay Express (click to read the great article) suggested that the recession has been "particularly hard on the owners of soul food, Caribbean, or Louisiana kitchens". We need to do something about that.

So, tell your friends, bring your business cards, and an appetite to farmerbrown. If you can't go, spread the word anyway. Although this initiative originally focused on East Bay restaurants, this month we're going to mix things up a bit by dining at a venue in San Francisco. We're spreading the love :).

*Does not include tax and minimal fees from farmerbrown.

**no proof whatsoever aside from positive experience eating East Bay soul food. YBB is not responsible for severe awkwardness and/or panic attacks at mixUP---alright I'll stop. Enjoy!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
