I'm an assistant research scientist at the Michigan Tech Research Institute (near Green and Plymouth). I've been living and working in Ann Arbor full-time since January, 2010 and interned here during the 2008 and 2009 summers.
My alma mater, Michigan Technological University, maintains a research institute here with which I've interned with in the past. When I graduated I came to work in research full time. At the time, I didn't have any other attractive options and wasn't ready to start graduate school.
The only thing I have to complain about is project-specific. You can't choose 'em all in soft-money research.
I enjoy immense freedom in my day-to-day job, setting my own hours and directing much of my activities. I get to travel frequently, as well. I specialize in open-source software development and for a wide variety of technical projects I have the freedom to explore and learn to use new libraries, tools and frameworks.
I work for a soft-money research institute.
We specialize in environmental monitoring, transportation infrastructure analysis, remote sensing, water quality, sensor engineering and radar applications. Some of our projects are classified.
