Hike the Uwharrie and Dutchmans Creek Trails

This is a moderate but rather long hike (11.6 miles) through gently rolling peidmont woodlands, with lots of interesting rock outcropings. We will hike a loop, starting out on the Uwharrie Trail and switching over to the Duthmans Creek Trail where the two intersect. Then we'll hike back on the Dutchmans Creek Trail. The highest point along the trail is Dennic Mountain at 732 feet, and from the summit we should have some nice views of Lake Tillery to the west, and Morrow Mountain on the other side of the lake.

Bring water and food for lunch in the woods, and of course dress for the weather. We can have dinner in Albermarle or Charlotte on the way back.  Those who wish to carpool can meet up at the parking lot of the elevation church in the shopping center located near the intersection of East Independence Blvd and I-485.  Otherwise, meet us at the trailhead on highway 24/27 east of Albermarle, a two miles past the bridge over the Pee Dee River, on the left.

Looks like there will be a total of nine of us. To recap, I'll pick up Li and Susana (my guest) at Stonecrest at 8:40, proceed to Elevation to pick up Marina at 9:00, and go from there to the trailhead to meet up with Gayle, Shawn, P.Z., Becky, and Betsy H. at about 10:00. Have I got that right?

My job is close to this area. After passing the bridge ,look for a BP station on the left side. After the BP station, you will pass a new Dollar General store on the left side. Start looking for entrance on the left side, for a parking lot slightly in the woods. I believe this is the location, however check to confirm the directions with the internet .

As far as I've been able to determine there is no 'street address' for the trailhead. There is, however, an easy to find country store on the same road less than a mile from the trailhead. It's called the "Uwharrie Sportsman," and it's address is 4593 NC-24, Mount Gilead, North Carolina. If you're coming from Charlotte you'll go through Albemarle on highway 24, cross the bridge I keep writing about, and it will be there on your right within a mile. You can't miss it. If you like you can just wait for us there, or you can continue down the road the same way you were going for about a mile and you'll see the trailhead on your left.

Just to clarify, the meetup time at the shopping center (I-485 and US 74) is 9:00am. Those who wish to drive straight to the trailhead and meet us there should expect us around 10:00. I expect the hike will take about 5 hours at our usual leisurely pace, so we should be back at the trailhead between 3:00 and 4:00. We will have a guest from the Waxhaw Group with us,and I understand Gayle has a guest (Susana) as well, so right now we expect to be eleven hikers.
