Going back centuries, the Ferragosto tradition recognizes the end of the harvest season and to enjoy the fruits of those labors. It is a way for families to engage in part of the Italian culture and coming together in a solid bond of family and friendship. Over 15 years ago, merchants of the Arthur Avenue/Belmont section decided to bring the Italian tradition to the Bronx and engage visitors from the Tri-State area and beyond in Italian culture, traditions, music and of course, the greatest food.
The Ferragosto event continues to grow each year with an average of 14-17,000 guests who travel from near and far to make it part of their family tradition. This year we also celebrate 100 years for Arthur Avenue. Generations of family-owned businesses continue to thrive and appeal to people from all over with their small-town charm, family atmosphere and preservation of Italian culture like no other area around. And enjoy you will, since there will be generations of local family-owned businesses on hand selling authentic Italian fare. The old-world charm of the festival comes alive through music and street performances from Commedia dell’Arte or “the art of comedy,” a 14th-century style of entertainment, as well as jazz and rock acts, which will be performing throughout the day.
