Please join us for a special monthly meeting in May. This meeting will be a joint meeting between Chicago 350 and Neighbors for Environmental Justice, a McKinley Park-based grassroots group formed approximately a year ago in response to residents’ concerns around the new MAT Asphalt plant there. Specifically, McKinley Park Residents have been worried about the particulate matter being released into the air due to the plant and trucks carrying asphalt from the plant. This type of particle pollution has been linked to various health impacts, including lung disease and cancer. MAT Asphalt has submitted an application for a 5-year operating permit to the IEPA and the IEPA has not released its draft permit for review. When IEPA does publish the draft permit, the public (inc. our group, allies like you, and the community) will have 90 days to comment on the draft permit. IEPA has also stated that they will hold a public hearing on the draft permit in McKinley Park. We expected the draft permit to be released a month ago, but it hasn’t. To learn more, please visit the Neighbors for Environmental Justice website at

The joint meeting between 350 Chicago and N4EJ will consist of a sharing of our respective missions and projects. Afterwards, we will visit the McKinley Park Community Garden, a wetlands and native plant area, and, then, the asphalt plant. To round out the day, we’ll visit Marz Brewery, an awesome local, well, brewery. It should be a great day, with lots of collaboration and opportunity to learn about important local environmental issues! Please join us if you can.

Getting there: If traveling by L, take the Orange Line to 35thArcher and from there it’s a ten-minute walk to the play garden. If traveling by bus, take the #9 Ashland bus, #50 Damen bus, #49 Western bus, or #35 31st/35th bus. Finally, if traveling by car, McKinley Park is just south of the I-55/Stevenson expressway.
