  • Dorset - Guided walks amongst amazing landscapes, nature, beaches and a castle

Glenn, professional walk leader, map reader and survival guide will take you on a daily walk with a variety of landscapes in beautiful Dorset. Accommodation for the weekend will be in 3 bedroomed luxury lodges sleeping five in three bedrooms (or six if you are good friends) situated in the heart of Dorset heathland. A stonesthrow from Studland's stunning, award winning beaches, the site will be our base for the weekend. Plenty of car parking on site for those of you who are driving but if you are travelling by train to Poole, collection can be arranged. We will be surrounded by opportunities for relaxation, walking options or just lounging its really up to you. Arne RSPB reserve is just down the road - literally! with its Dartford Warblers, Smooth snakes, Sika deer and Nightjar. On the mudflats those of you who are interested in wildlife will see Spoonbills - yes a resident colony, Avocets - not long ago almost extinct in the UK and Marsh Harriers. A good time to visit the reserve would be just before dawn which unfortunately in June at midsummer is at about 3am!! Suggest we might leave it a bit later but I would be happy to take a group of very quiet walkers down to explore the site before the day's serious walking begins. Saturday will see us walking out from the accommodation over Brenscombe Hill to Corfe Castle, a very significant local landmark. Most of the village at Corfe Castle was built from the stone remnants of the castle after it was blown up by Cromwell's forces toward the end of the English civil war. There are a number of cafe/restaurant/delicatessens in the village. After scrambling over the ruins of the castle we will then continue on our journey to Knowle Hill and then onto Furzebrook and Middlebere. We will be walking over some of the most endangered heathland habitat in the country which contains flora and fauna found nowhere else in the UK. We will walk across the Hartland National Nature Reserve before returning to our accommodation. Saturday evening if you have not booked a table at 'The Pig', you might want to pop down to Swanage for a bite to eat. There are some exceptionally good seafood restaurants on the newly refurbished quay and we could use the steam railway to get there from Corfe Castle. Alternatively there are some great food options in Corfe itself or we could take the short trip up to Wareham where again there are a number of very good eateries. On Sunday pre breakfast we could venture down to Studland beach for an early swim. The sea here is particularly safe and extremely clean. If there has been a spell of good weather the rocks at the Western end of the beach are excellent for snorkelling. To the East of the beach there is a colony of seahorses - difficult to spot though!!! Later in the morning after breakfast, for those of you that would like to walk, we will head out over Godlingston heath towards Studland. The Bankes Arms will offer us a good place to stop for lunch before we continue to the clifftop walk along to Old Harry rocks. We will then head back along Ballard Down and return to Burnbake for our journeys home. There are a number of exceptional pub/restaurants nearby including 'The Pig on the Beach' https://www.thepighotel.com/on-the-beach/ - booking is recommended. Pub connoisseurs amongst you will be excited to know that the Square and Compass Inn is also not too far away. http://www.squareandcompasspub.co.uk/ Price includes accommodation and two days of guided walks. Price does not include transport to or from the venue - although I can arrange collection from either Poole or Wareham railway stations. I will provide each lodge group with some basic breakfast foods - let me know what you would like nearer the date, and food for picnics during the day. Cost £250 Account Number[masked] Sort code[masked] If you have any questions please do not post here as it just generates confusion. Please text or whatsapp me on[masked] Thanks Glenn

  • Walking in Snowdonia with professional guide- Snowden Horseshoe and waterfalls

A mountain walking weekend that should be accessible for most. We will stay in the Rocks Hostel in Capel Curig, (www.therockshostel.com) widely regarded as one of the most sought after hostels in Wales. Arriving on Friday we will settle in and meet for a pre adventure meal in the Tyn Y Coed Inn just down the road. On Saturday we will make our way down to Pen Y Pas and join the trail of one of the paths heading up to Snowdon, or we could head up to Snowdon via one of the many other paths that are easily accessible. The route we take will be dependent upon the experience and fitness of the group and our descent will be via the return leg of the 'Snowdon Horseshoe' - a fairly lengthy and challenging walk. I am not going to dictate the itinerary for Sunday - that's up to you. We have an option of exploring Moel Siabod a stunning mountain right outside the hostel, surrounded by overgrown quarry workings that are now home to an amazing array of wildlife. Crimpiau is another peak to the rear of the hostel with a stunning approach and a nature reserve behind it. Once I know who is committed we will meet a month or so before the event to discuss the final itinerary. This weekend is unsuitable for those who are unfit or inexperienced hill walkers. Having said that I welcome anybody regardless of experience but you must understand that if at any time you feel you cannot continue with our walk, you will have to make your own way back to the start point, probably unaccompanied. Whilst the walking will be led by me and my activities will be covered by my insurance policies, I strongly recommend that you take out your own insurance for this trip - www.thebmc.co.uk/insurance. If any of you wish to examine my insurance policies I am happy to mail them to you The cost of the weekend will be £152. Included are two nights accommodation - room only, at The Rocks in shared rooms (Four or six people per room), and two days guiding in the locations mentioned. Not included is travel to and from Capel Curig and meals. The hostel is self catering but there is an exceptional cafe just along the road which is good for meals throughout the day. Evening meals are available from various pubs/restaurants in the area If you wish to join us for the walking but would like to source your own accommodation, that's fine but please let me know. Strongly recommend that if you do want to take this option, that your accommodation is in or very close to Capel Curig. • Easter Processions, walking and sight-seeing in Spain

    Castro de Filabres

    £150.00

Dee Kay will be welcoming a group in Almeria, southern Spain, to enjoy walking in the mountains and desert and to witness some of the unique traditions of Easter including the spectacular processions during Holy Week. The group will be small, with a maximum of 8...so book early to avoid disappointment! We will be staying in a mountain village called Castro de Filabres, 10 miles from Tabernas and only 40 minutes from Almeria airport Our first Procession will be the first evening - Wednesday night. To understand Semana Santa in Andalucia, we learn about the groups of people who are at the heart of it all - the cofrades or members of cofradías, the religious associations that care for the images of Christ and Mary that are used in the processions and that meet throughout the year for various activities and to plan the next Holy Week celebrations and events in their local area. In the heart of these organisations we find the history of present day Holy Week celebrations in Andalucia. It all goes back to when the cofradías formed in the 16th century and were provided with regulations by the Council of Trent to ensure that they based themselves on true Catholic doctrines and did not include any pagan or unnecessary traditions. There are three types of cofradías: Penitenciales De Gloria Sacramentales Only the penitenciales participate in the Holy Week parades around Andalucia. Their historical purpose has been to bring silent Catholic convictions out into the light of day at specific times of the year, Holy Week - in order to bring the liturgy out of the church to the people in the street. Members of Cofradías take their responsibilities very seriously. They are highly organised groups with governing bodies and committees. Everyone has a role to play and news of these groups will appear in local press from time to time throughout the year with information becoming more and more frequent as Semana Santa nears. One of the most distinctive features, however, is the presence of tronos – huge ornate floats that are carried through the streets by hundreds of church members. These remarkable thrones depicting scenes from the Passion are escorted by groups of penitents wearing long purple robes and women in black holding lit candles. They start as it turns dark so that we can enjoy the atmosphere and candle lit Processions….which last around 2 and half hours as the huge entourage winds its way through the narrow streets... Resurection Procession Tabernas During the day, we’ll go off exploring, walking and enjoying local sights. This area of Spain is off the beaten track so expect the unexpected… The holiday will include: 3 Easter Processions celebrating the various stages of the lead up to the crucifixion Daily walks/excursions to the rugged coastline in the Nijar National Park, local desert of Tabernas and in the surrounding hills and mountains... Click here for a video of Dee Kay walking in the mountains above Castro de Filabres Visits to local markets, olive oil factories, pretty white villages and Bronze Age settlement Accommodation is in self-contained terraced cottages Every day a 3 course meal will be included Breakfasts are provided in your own cottages to be taken at your own convenience - all other meals are taken together either en route when we are out, or back in the village.
