  • This is a Sunday walk as the Friends Of Wanstead Parklands are holding a Christmas Miscellany at the Temple at Wanstead Park and we can drop in and have refreshments before exploring the park.

Wanstead Park is owned by the City of London Corporation and is a Grade II* historic landscape on the English Heritage at risk register. We will see traces of the original Wanstead House landscaped park and walk around the Ornamental lakes. see www.wansteadpark.org.uk

11:30 Starting at Wanstead station walking along St Mary's Avenue land once owned by the estate to St Mary's Church and Wanstead Golf club which was the stable block to the house.

From here a 15min walk will take us into the forest/park at Warren Road and we will go directly to the Temple, which will be open to the public, and from there walk around the Ornamental lakes (2.75 miles).

There is plenty of wildlife to view on this part of the walk Heron, Egrets,  Cormorants as well as Swan, Moorhen, Geese  and of course ducks! please do not bring bread as feed but lettuce, oats, corn, peas are fine. I would normally walk this in under an hour but time will entirely depend on the slowest walker, and how often we stop for photos or details on the history of the park.

The walk will take us to the Long Walk, shown on the above plan originally the lawn from the house, see below long since demolished, to the lake.

From there we will retrace our steps to The George for a late lunch.

This may be a WET WEATHER WALK please come prepared walking boots & wet weather gear!
