This will be an 11-mile drive (point to point) along a US FS road about 20 minutes northeast of Santa Clarita combined with a 3-mile loop hike.
The drive will start out on Coarsegold Rd and climb along a dirt road to the top of Del Sur Ridge. This goes along an area popular with motorcycles riding on dirt trails that crisscross the road many times. The road, if taken to it's northernmost end would lead to Bouquet Reservoir. There are sections that are gravel/rock, but most of it is dirt. The road is wide enough to pass another vehicle for most of the route, but is not a high-speed road. An average of 10-15 mph is about the max you can do without doing damage to your car.
Relatively near the beginning of the drive there are some trails that run between Del Sur Ridge and Haskell Canyon. We will do a 3-mile loop hike from the bottom of Haskell Canyon up to Del Sur Ridge and returning via different routes. Some of this hike will be exploratory (rough, perhaps no trail) along the streambed, and it will include a hike up an un-named ridge that may be somewhat overgrown (that means bushwhacking). That hike is not terribly long, but there is a 400' EG section that looks really steep. Hiking shoes are required, and trekking poles are recommended, long pants are highly recommended. I expect the hike to be a little more than 3 miles in length. Bring a liter of water and perhaps wear sunscreen.
You can look at the expected hike route in GREEN, the main drive route in BLUE, and the spur drive to the start of the hike in RED on this Caltopo map:
Conditions and options:
This road does not strictly require high-clearance or 4WD, but there was a fair amount of mud and a few places that require care as they are rutted, both horizontally as well as washed out areas transverse to the road. There are also optional side spurs that do require 4x4 in low gears to traverse, but those spurs are optional. The main road does NOT require 4WD and therefore this event does not require 4WD. It is also possible to drive around almost all of the mud. I wouldn't want to take a 2WD sedan, but an SUV with street tires can certainly traverse the main route (the BLUE) route. I did not take the RED route, but saw the road. It may get significantly steeper on the section I could not see.
The road was open yesterday, Dec 9.
I suggest that those people that are going to arrive early meet at the nearby Starbucks:
27667 Bouquet Canyon Rd
Saugus, CA 91350
I will go to the Starbucks and leave at 7:50 AM sharp. It is about a 10 minute drive from Starbucks to the junction where we start the dirt road.
The official meetup will start at the junction of Bouquet Canyon Road and Coarsegold Road at 8:00 AM.
