THE HISTORY OF THE POPULAR MUSICALS WE GREW UP WITH….

Details

Note: This is a U3A event that we will be supporting. Entrance is free to all current U3A members, visitors pay R 30.00.

This presentation forms part of a series which Bev Lawrence has produced. It looks at how popular music has developed from medieval times to the present. The part to be presented at this event looks at the history of the terrific Broadway musicals. He will start with the first of the modern musical genre – ‘Showboat’. This is a very powerful and emotional story, with great songs like ‘Ol’ Man River’ and ‘Only Make Believe’. After that a number of other great musicals will be covered, such as ‘Oklahoma’, ‘Carousel’, ‘South Pacific’, ‘The King and I’, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘Gigi’, and he will end with the all-time favourite ‘The Sound of Music’.

Expect bit of talking, but lots of music and a great time socializing afterwards with friends in the coffee shop.

About the presenter:
Bev Lawrence and his wife, Anabel are Rosehaven Retirement Village residents, which is directly across the road from the RUC. In 1961 he saw Cliff Richard and The Shadows performing live at the Colosseum, and was immediately hooked on pop music. However, wisely sticking to his chosen career as an Eskom power station engineer and manager, he enjoyed music as a passion and hobby on the side ever since. He has been playing lead, rhythm and bass guitar for many years, and has also been singing in various secular and church groups for over 60 years. Bev also tinkers on the technical side of music by building equipment, mixing sound at live gigs and in recording studios, and has produced a number of his own CDs. Catch him on his YouTube site called ‘Bev Lawrence’.
