Fun / Recreational / Fitness / Exploration ride. Average speeds 10-15 mph. The route is viewable and GPS file downloadable on MapMyRide @ http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/429894418
We begin at Van Cortlandt Park, will ride the Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) trail north. OCA is mostly dirt & light gravel. Just about any type of bike can ride it. Depending on the trail, we may end up hopping on & off the trail a few times. We'll ride this to Untermyer Gardens & do some exploring there. We'll then continue on to Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow. We won't be able to bike IN the cemetery, but we can still get there.
On the Return Trip, we'll be coming back via the Putnam Trail. This trail is asphalt paved all the way to the north boundary of VC park. The GREAT NEWS is that *almost* this entire ride, approx 35-40 miles, will be on isolated rail-trails. With very few exceptions, we will have NO CARS to deal with at all! Just the occasional other cyclists and the even more rare pedestrians. These trails get very little use compared to Manhattan or Brooklyn. In short? They.. Are.. Awesome!
Total distance approximately 35-40 miles. All bikes & rider skills welcome. This is a recreational fitness fun ride, not a race. Helmets mandatory on all my rides. No helmet? No ride. No exception. You must be comfortable riding in groups & riding in heavy traffic. I expect to encounter a variety of conditions. Bring cash, credit card, ID and Insurance cards. Be prepared. Also have hydration & snacks for energy.
Most importantly? Bring a fun positive attitude!
