API Craft RVA : Sixto Saez of CarMax on REST Fundamentals

  • Jun 9, 2014 · 6:00 PM

The API Craft meetup is a group for people who design and build and test APIs -
Topics for meetups include:
1. API Design - what makes a good API and what makes a bad API
2. The API development process - spec, dev, test and documentation
3. Future direction of APIs - new developments
4. The business of APIs - metrics and business models
5. API evangelism - internal and external

For our inaugural meetup, we'll have a 10-minute talk from Sixto Saez of CarMax on REST Fundamentals:

Fourteen years ago, Dr. Roy Fielding defined REST precisely (and exhaustively) in his PhD thesis. Today, the term REST has different meanings to different people. I will kickoff the meeting with a brief introduction into the fundamentals of REST.

After the talk we'll go into our topic suggestions and discussion format. Example topics discussed or suggested from API Craft meetups elsewhere include:

• Documenting APIs
• APIs as first class citizen products
• API error/status code/exceptions
• When to not use an API
• Maintaining / sustainable API growth
• How to retrieve and integrate with data

About our speaker:

Sixto has been developing .NET web applications since 2002 .With the first technology preview of WCF, then known by the code name “Indigo”, he started to migrate toward developing the back end of web applications with his first production-ready WCF services deployed in December of 2006. He now works at CarMax developing web-applications and the HTTP based services that power them. You can track his progress through .NET, WCF, iOS and of course, REST application development by checking out his questions and answers at

I hope everyone is getting excited about Monday's Meetup - I've just put in the catering order for BUZ & NED'S (with appropriate vegetarian-friendly add-ons!) so - please invite a co-worker or colleague or two and have them register!
