Join us Friday, September 21st for a workshop delivered by 8th Light's Casey Brant!
Workshop: Make a Game in 3 Hours with PuzzleScript
Lunch will be provided by 8th Light (https://8thlight.com/).
PuzzleScript (https://www.puzzlescript.net/) is a fun and easy-to-learn web-based game creation tool. It's a game engine, programming language, level editor, pixel art creator, and sharing platform all in one. By focusing on a subset of game genres (specifically, block-pushing puzzle games), PuzzleScript introduces constraints that make it possible to go from zero experience to a working game in a surprisingly short amount of time.
In this workshop, Casey will teach the basics of PuzzleScript, and then we'll form small groups and create our own games! At the end of the session, each group will take a few minutes to present their game and anything interesting they discovered while building it.
The opening presentation will be broadcast online (https://zoom.us/j/3541015445), and we'll have a Slack channel for discussion during the workshop portion. If you want to participate but can't make it to the 8th Light office, send an email to [masked] to get an invitation to the Slack channel.
+ Breaking out of your normal specialty and building something multi-disciplinary like a game can be a valuable perspective shift and fosters creative thinking.
+ Because the PuzzleScript environment is so constrained, a single person or small group can quickly create an entire game themselves. Even if you lack prior experience in art, design, or programming, you can make something that looks good and is fun to play.
+ PuzzleScript's programming model involves an interesting pattern-matching language and event loop which combine in surprising and elegant ways. If you're a programmer, the different style is interesting to explore; if you're not a programmer, PuzzleScript's language is intuitive enough that you'll still be able to get something working quickly.
+ It's fun! Watching someone else play your game can be immensely satisfying.
