3/4/5 Aug 12, Eco Retreat Weekender with Centre for Alternative Technology :)

  • Aug 3, 2012 · 2:00 PM

Hi Folks

Tired of this grey old city, or the monotony of everyday life? Come with us to explore some alternative ways of doing things, and have a healing experience for your mind, body and spirit..

During this weekend they'll be the opportunity to hike through the countryside, get some adventure, (or just chill out if you prefer!) and visit the world renowned Centre for Alternative Technology.

The main idea of this weekend however is to have a nice weekend away where we can just kick back and chill out together, look at some new stuff, investigate some new ways of doing things and have a weekend to replenish well being health and vitality, and let's face it you can never have to much of that.

We'll have optional hiking to do but the hikes are not massive and if you happen to be a bit below par, have an injury or not feel like running around too much you can opt in or out of as much as you like. This will be the height of summer so hopefully we'll be catching those lovely summer rays of sunshine. The setting is idyllic!

The highlight of the weekend will be a visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology.Based in beautiful Mid Wales, the centre overlooks Snowdonia National Park, renowned for it's scenery and outdoor activities. A national centre of excellence for Environmental Technology it is also an Ecological Tourist experience similar to the Eden Project.

Along with a range of interactive displays, there are working examples of environmentally responsible buildings, renewable energy generation, and sustainability in the home. Some of the highlight include, a water powered lift at the entrance, lots of different gardens including food you can pick and eat from the polytunnels, displays of different forms of wind turbine's, creating energy using a paddle in water,a straw bale theatre, and even going down a man sized wormhole and getting an underground view of the soil structure!

The best thing is these displays are not just for show; they are part of a thriving, sustainable organisation run on renewable energy generated on site.

You come away feeling energised, having had a lot of fun and learnt loads!

Location:

The picturesque Village of Corris nestles amongst breathtaking scenery, just outside of Snowdonia national park.

Pretty grey slate buildings remain in what was once a bustling slate mining centre with quirky sights and traditions impossible to find elsewhere. It's surrounded by extinct volcanoes and waterfalls, and we pass one of the waterfalls on one of the walks.

One of the best features of any UK village is the traditional English Pub, we'll be making sure we make the most of the one in Corris.

Accommodation:

We'll be staying in Wales’s most funky Green Hostel which has an international "Bohemian" atmosphere. Management have intended the place to be as sustainable as possible, Eco-friendly products are used wherever possible and compost materials are used by the Centre for Alternative Technology as part of their high fibre compost project. The award winning green hostel is also a Founding member of the Dyfi Green Tourism Guide within the Dyfi Eco Valley Partnership.

The beds are in shared rooms that are partitioned into cubicles of two to four beds per cubicle with thick pine partitioning for privacy. These sit within the Hostels 16 foot high Chapel deign ceilings.

Eco Experience:

As well as visiting the Centre for Alternative Technology. We'll start day two with some short talks on environmental and holistic topics and we'll also be doing a small amount of open mike sessions as I know many of you guys have some great expertise. If you're going to join us for this one and have a passion about positive psychology or holistic health and want to do a short speaker slot to share your knowledge – get in touch. Likewise if anyone has Yoga / Pilates Experience which they want to put into practice. Drop us a line.
