What is your religious or non-religious background?

I was raised Catholic, but I didn't have a negative experience with it. I was also taught respect for science and encouraged to love learning from a young age. I felt ambiguous about religion for quite awhile. The ascendance of the Religious Right and the politics and wars that followed 9/11 forced me to reassess my beliefs and figure out just where I stood. I was drawn to the values of Unitarian Universalism and the philosophy of humanism.

What topics interest you the most?

I'm interested in promoting the values of humanism, as well as working on social justice and finding common ground among people of different beliefs. I think bringing more visibility to humanists by contributing positively to our community, rather than telling religious believers they are in error, is the best way to promote non-belief. I'm concerned about some aspects of the secular movement and want to help it engage with society in a healthy way. I think climate change is probably the biggest problem we face as a nation and world, and working to combat it is probably one of the most important things any of us can spend our time on.

I'm a filmmaker and activist originally from New York City, happily living in LA for over a decade.
