Getting Involved
Our clubs members participate in many different ocean, reef and other conservation activities. If you want to make a difference, YOU CAN! Our members are involved in the following projects. Let all make a difference and Get Involved!

International Scuba Clean Up Day

At least 6 million tonnes of debris enters the world’s oceans each year, causing harm to underwater environments and wildlife. With unique access to the underwater world, scuba divers can help remove debris underwater, raise awareness and drive positive change.

Project AWARE Foundation is dedicated to addressing the devastating impacts of marine debris and coordinates global beach and underwater cleanups year round.

SECORE
SECORE is a unique initiative to address coral conservation issues by combining the best of two worlds. It creates a platform where public aquaria & zoos work closely together with marine science, sharing knowledge and practical skills in coral husbandry and coral research. SECORE aims at contributing to a healthy future for the most diverse ecosystem of the sea: the coral reef.

Focussing on sexual reproduction of reefbuilding corals around the world, SECORE (SExual COral REproduction) provides tools for live stock management in public aquaria. We promote cooperation between top scientists in coral reproduction biology and related fields. SECORE is an active partner in coral conservation and public outreach.

Columbus Zoo & Aquarium
We have a number of club members that work as volunteers at the Columbus Zoo's Aquarium. They help with feeding the fish, cleaning the tanks, help the Manatees, and provide ocean and reef education to visitors about the aquarium and aquatic life. Since there are so many volunteers that help the zoo, there are not any openings at the moment for new volunteers to participate. The Zoo does hold workshops every few years for new volunteers. So when they do we will post more information about it.

MAST - Maritime Archeology Survey Team
If you are into Maritime Archeology and Wreck Conservation efforts in the Great Lakes then MAST is where you want to be. It is a lot of fun and you are making a difference.

To become a member of the MAST you complete the MAST spring training and attending the open water quarry dives, you automatically become a MAST member. It’s that easy – and, it’s a great value: There are presently no dues or membership fees associated with our membership. The initial cost of the workshop has been purposely kept low so as to encourage participation. Quite simply, we want you to join MAST. Here’s why…

MAST membership entitles you to participate in any of the exciting summer surveys scheduled on actual shipwrecks in Lake Erie. Resident Archeologist Carrie Sowden notifies members by email the dates of the summer project surveys. Respondents are booked aboard the research boat for the day’s survey cruise.

MAST members also receive via email the quarterly Surveyor newsletter, filled with interesting articles, project updates, and announcements on educational opportunities. Members have the opportunity to suggest workshop topics, and, we listen!

Once you complete the basic underwater archeological training, you’re ready for many additional opportunities to advance your skills. MAST offers quarterly programs in continuing education. Each spring, concurrent with the basic underwater archeological training course, we also provide the Advanced Underwater archeological training, a second tier program.

Advanced training focuses on increasing your experience in running an archeology survey and honing the skills you learned in the basic program. There is also a third tier training program that allows that allows a small group of divers to select, research and run their own underwater survey with a budget.

So, if you’ve completed MAST spring training and the open water quarry dives, you automatically became a MAST member. Welcome to the club!
