Meeting #4: Dan Towner reveals The Inner Secrets of Compilers

  • Jan 9, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Bristol Marriott Hotel City Centre

For our first talk of the new year, ACCU member Dan Towner will be revealing The Inner Secrets of Compilers.

Dan's talk aims to demystify the clever parts of compilers that nobody ever told you about, explaining their inner secrets in simple terms. Come along to find out what induction variables do, what software pipelining is, how vectorisation works, how code scheduling is done, and how the debugger makes sense of it all.

Dan has worked on tool chain software for parallel and multi-core systems for the last 14 years. He was an official port maintainer for the GCC Picochip port for much of that time, and was also technical lead on Picochip's multi-core debugger project. Dan now works in the Systems Architecture group at Mindspeed developing system modelling tools.

Sadly I could not attend the meeting.

Although it was a second best experience, I really enjoyed listening to the talk and found the slides great to run alongside the sound track.

A BIG thank you to Dan, for the talk, and to Ewan, for making it available.

Hi - I'm not going to be able to make this meeting now. Are there any plans to record it? Dan - are you planning to do this presentation again?

Hi Richard - sorry you couldn't make it, but I did make a rough audio recording. See my message above, or else the link is here -

Hi Ewan, thanks for the file.

Thanks Dan for an excellent start to 2013. Hope everyone has spotted the slides that Dan uploaded - if not, look in the More tab, select Files.

I recorded the talk on my phone - audio only, and mediocre sound quality (even after my post-production). The resulting file is too big to upload here, but I have put it in my public Dropbox folder here:

    Really interesting talk and conversations.

Sorry to hear you can't make it. You'd have to ask Ewan about whether this will be recorded. I've no plans to give it again. I can distribute the slides to those interested though.

I haven't made any plans to record the talk, but I could try to capture audio. With Dan's permission we will share the slides with the group here (in the Files section).
