Makerspace Open House

Interested in seeing a Makerspace? The DC ACM is hosting an open house at Nova Labs, a Makerspace in Reston, Virginia. This event is an opportunity to casually peek at a Makerspace and take an informative tour. You will get to see the lab’s equipment, see what people are making, learn more about the Makerspace concept, and meet other members.

The Nova Labs space offers equipment that engineers and creative types use to make things. The Makerspace has computer-controlled equipment such as a laser cutter, the CNC Drill, and the 3D Printers. Additionally, mechanical tools are available, such as carpentry equipment, saws, drills, and lathes.

Several DC ACM members expressed interest in learning more about the Makerspace concept. A relatively new type of facility, a Makerspace is a place where people congregate to make things, very often with computer based technology. Many groups regularly meet at Makerspaces, such as drone building groups, software groups, and 3D printing enthusiasts. There are many Makerspaces around the world, with many new ones continually opening. Because Makerspaces are evolving and are independent from each other, each Makerspace has its own culture and activity. Come join us to see what a Makerspace is, ask questions about it, and observe what is happening here in the DC area.

There are a handful of parking spots near Nova Labs that get filled up during larger events. There is a second public parking lot across the street available with infinite openness, if you need to make parking space.

Amar was a terrific host and the NOVA Lab members were friendly and helpful. Lots of interesting equipment efficiently fitted into a small space. It'll be interesting to see the Lab's new home when they move in a few months and what they'll do with even more space. Enjoyed seeing the open source 3D software in action.

This Makerspace is host to several groups with particular interests and members. However, the Open House provided an opportunity for potential new members to take a guided tour and get to know what the Makerspace has to offer.

Is there food at the meeting or should we feed ourselves before or after?

Thanks, Amar. Is the outing before or after the meeting?

It will be towards the end of the meeting, with the destination picked by community vote.
