Old School Mini-Megadungeon OpenTable Campaign

Join us for the fourth session of an old-school expedition to assault and explore a mini mega-dungeon in an ongoing open-table campaign!

Beginners and those curious about old-school games welcome!

You do not need a copy of the books to play!

What happened in the previous sessions? Check it out here: Official" Campaign Blog

Attention Players: If you don't already have a character in this campaign or want to play a different character, you can roll one (or better, three) at home, or show up around 6:30 PM (30 mins prior to game) and we'll roll up your character(s).

If you can't make it early, no worries, I'll have pre-gens ready to go!

*** I have changed the start time to 7 PM. If you can't make it by 7 PM, just show up when you can. We'll get your character to the party one way or another! ***

What's an open table? Whoever shows up that week plays. Drop in and drop out at your heart's desire.

Rules: We'll be playing 1981's Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rulebook ed. Tom Moldvay  and  Dungeons & Dragons Expert Rulebook eds. David Cook and Steve Marsh. For those not wishing to buy the PDF or track down a copy, Labyrinth Lord is free and is the same more or less.

Documents to Check Out:

•  Some Things of Note (if you've played more recent editions of D&D, this will explain some differences)

• House rules These are my personal house rules and do apply during our sessions. We had our first use of the d30 rule last session!

Hi all, I had a great time tonight. Thanks for playing! Sorry I didn't get to say good bye to everyone - Tony (manager) was explaining to me how their pull service works. I can still picture the makeshift APC in my head quite clearly and I suspect i will for a long time. I will post the session summary on Monday over on the campaign blog. As always, if you want your character to do anything in the "down time" in town, let me know. Shopping, research, meeting with NPCs (see the player's guide to Gorgoroth for some known names), whatever, and we can handle it here, email or in the campaign blog comments. Thanks again!

I'm excited to be joining you all for the first time. Will be bringing my boyfriend along to take part of the adventure! Question. I'm sketching up a character right now for the campaign. What classes are you lacking in? I'm versatile. I tend to enjoy being a mage/druid, but don't mind being a rogue, etc. We'll be there at 6:30pm to get the character sheets completed. Does someone have an extra player's handbook to share for this session? About to order handbooks soon for personal use. See you all soon!

We left early, but the GPS is showing an accident on ramp for 285, delaying us. Estimated time of arrival is 7pm. Sorry we aren't able to arrive early as planned! X_x

Hi All ~ Michael and I aren't going to be able to make it. Partially due to weather, partially due to the huge party size. :) Y'all will probably have a better game with fewer players. -A & M

It turns out I have a family event I need to go to. I don't know if the system will automatically move Tony from waitlist to attendee, but that is what should happen.

So, in D&D B/X, are there magic items? How prevalent?

They exist, they are considerably rarer than 3.5 in my experience (3.5 requires tons for the math to work out). AD&D (came out after Bx, used Xp from selling magic items as a major source of XP. The useless mismatched items were the point in the way)

Yes, the chances of finding magic items in a treasure hoard is relatively low (compared to coins or even gems/jewelry ). Individual NPCs might have one, if the DM deems it appropriate, but by and large, they turn up in the lairs of monsters, or, if with humanoids, in the hands of the chiefs/leaders/shamans/priests , rather than the ordinary "foot soldiers"(who are more likely to use the individual's treasure table and have only a few coins). Off the top of my head, I think it's less than a 5% chance of an unguarded treasure having a magic item. Magic item manufacture is possible, at substantial cost (see the Expert book).
