ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Tim Sears
Former VP of Data Science, Target

Tim Sears built the Data Science & Engineering team at Target, taking it from 30 to 140 data scientists, data engineers and platform engineers over his 4+ years at Target. During that time Target underwent a major transformation in its software development strategy. In this talk, Tim will share his experiences about how to maximize the value of data science to an organization that is on the journey of "transformation with a capital T". He will explain how learning how to talk about data science as a "product" is the first step and how to manage the risks and opportunities along the way. Finally, he will explain the importance of showing the value and business impact, which is critical to guiding future investment in this fast-moving area. All these lessons have helped Target build a sophisticated, well-integrated team using machine learning to compete successfully with Amazon and Walmart.
