Title: Ethical Data Science & AI

Presenter: Steph Locke

Level: Introductory to Intermediate

Abstract:
We want to do no harm but sometimes our models have unintended consequences. Come learn about some of the ethical challenges we as data scientists may face, how we can put checklists and frameworks around ourselves to help ensure we don’t do unethical things accidentally, and what tools we can use to check our models for issues.

Bio:
Steph Locke is the CEO and co-founder of Nightingale HQ, a platform helping businesses get AI ready. She also works as a consultant, via her own company, Locke Data. Finally, Steph is also the founder of several conferences, including the worldwide R event; satRdays, and the new DataOps event, DataOpticon. Steph’s talks, blog posts, conferences, and business all have one thing in common – they help people get started with data science and AI. Steph holds a dual Microsoft MVP award (one for AI, and another for Data Platform) for her community contributions.

Title: Deep Learning for Small Data Sets

Presenter: Daphné Chopard

Level: Introductory to Intermediate

Abstract:
For the past few years, deep learning has been pushing back the boundaries in many fields, such as computer vision, speech recognition and natural language processing. This success can be attributed not only to better computational resources, but also to the large amount of data available nowadays. So, what can one do when only having access to a limited number of training examples? Is it still possible to take advantage of such a powerful technique? In this talk, I will discuss ways to develop deep architectures that generalise well on unseen data despite being trained on small size data sets.

Bio:
Daphné Chopard is a PhD student at Cardiff University School of Computer Science and Informatics. She holds both a BSc and a MSc degree in Computational Science and Engineering from ETH Zurich. Her thesis focuses on data augmentation for text data as means to apply deep learning to smaller data sets in the context of natural language processing.
