What we're about
Calling all orchestral, chamber, and early music instrumentalists and singers who also love the outdoors!
The Mountains and Music committee of the Appalachian Mountain Club's Boston Chapter sponsors two weekends each year that combine music-making and outdoor activities. The fall weekend is at Pinkham Notch, NH. The winter weekend alternates between Pinkham Notch and Sargent Camp in Peterborough, NH. We sponsor at least one chamber music play-in day per year. Signups happen here and also at our AMC website ( http://amcboston.org/committee/music ) and our Facebook page (AMC Mountains and Music (https://www.facebook.com/AMC-Mountains-and-Music-322357494465589/?fref=ts)).
For the weekends, instrumentalists join together to play chamber and early music as well as to rehearse and perform several orchestral pieces. We welcome any orchestral instrument - strings, brass, woodwinds, timpani, etc. - and early instruments, such as recorder. Instrumentalists should be able to sight-read. Singers rehearse, then perform, a large choral work with the orchestra and form informal groups to sing madrigals, rounds, and other small ensemble pieces. We are fortunate to attract talented and inspirational orchestral and choral conductors, whose enthusiasm helps us create music in our short time together.
During the winter weekend, there is a third-day option that includes a talent show on the final night, where you can showcase any special skill, whether musical, poetic, juggling, or whatever. Listeners, usually spouses, are always welcome to our weekends. Weekends are enjoyed by from 80 - 120 attendees.
Our one-day play-in is usually in March and most recently is being held in Newton, MA. We help attending musicians form compatible groups for four 45-minute playing sessions. Our play-ins range in size from 40 - 70 musicians. The play-ins are not appropriate for listeners... please join us for our weekends, instead.
Come join the fun!
