9D, Beacon, NY
Join us as we hike up the to the casino ruins, then on to the Firetower at the top of Mt. Beacon for a beautiful sunset. We will watch the sun drop below the horizon, then hike back in the twilight and eventual total dark to the trailhead. The two viewpoints at these spots are some of the prettiest in the Hudson Valley highlands. The hike will be a combination of urban walk through Beacon (4 total miles roundtrip), then up the Casino Trail (marked Red, 5 miles total roundtrip). We will return the same way IN DARKNESS and finish with optional visits to a brew pub, wine bar, Irish pub, and a garage-based whiskey distillery in the hip town of Beacon. Others are welcome to get food or stroll through the very hip town. There is some 1600 feet of elevation gain, so hiking boots or robust sneakers are required, as well as your own water, flashlight, and snacks. Dress appropriately for the cold weather. Approximately 9 miles total, 2-3 of which are a steep climb. This is for experienced hikers and strong beginners. We are RETURNING IN THE DARK, which makes it difficult to track downward on the slippery rock-strewn trail. Heavy rain cancels. We will meet at the big clock (Information Center) in Grand Central at 11:30 am for the 11:43 am train to Beacon, or at the Beacon Metro North station at 1:11 pm. To join, you must email Patrick at [masked].
