After a long time of absence, the time for a new API Athens meetup is almost here! We are very excited to host: 1. George Marinos from National Bank of Greece. George will speak about PSD2 and Open APIs: Opportunities and Challenges and the story of NBG’s API. 2. Nick Karapanagou (https://www.linkedin.com/in/nikoskarapanagou/) from Motivian (http://www.motivian.com). Nick will talk about Utilizing and integrating with 3rd party vendor APIs. Note the day -> Thursday, September 28th at The Cube Athens (http://thecube.gr/) @ 19:00. Mark your calendars and join us. ========== The talks in more details: 1. PSD2 and Open APIs: Opportunities and Challenges Who: The presentation will be given by George Marinos from IT Division of the National Bank of Greece who has been working on preparing the Bank for the adoption of PSD2 for the last two years. Description: By January 2018 banks must comply with EU’s second Payment Service Directive (PSD2) aiming to drive increased competition, innovation, and transparency across the European payments market. At the core of PSD2 is the requirement for the Banks to grant Third Parties (developers, software houses, Fintechs etc) access to customers’ online data through open APIs when, of course, account holders provide consent. At the upcoming meetup we will have the opportunity to explore the main challenges and opportunities that the new substantial development offers for the incumbents and particularly for the developers’ ecosystem. Furthermore, it will be also presented how National Bank of Greece has approached the challenge concluding to its existing public available Developers’ API Portall. The preparation of NBG’s API lasted almost two years, during which many approaches were designed, tested and revised concluding to the existing solution, aiming at the same time, to provide not only a full range of services to the developers but also a kick starting for the digital ecosystem for financial services. 2. Utilizing and integrating with 3rd party vendor APIs Who: The presentation will be held by Nikos Karapanagou, CTO of Motivian. Description: As people interactions move even more from the physical to the digital world, APIs are an essential ingredient and a common practice to provide services to the world. This is enhanced by the regulatory frameworks like PSD2 and government push for e-services. Utility comes at an expense though. Compatibility, versioning, and maintenance issues are some of the daily obstacles that organizations have to overcome daily. Motivian has integrated with dozens of APIs in large enterprises like banks, telecom operators, and private enterprises. At the upcoming meetup, we will share our experiences so far, common pitfalls and issues as well as our approach in utilizing and integrating with 3rd party vendor APIs. We hope you will enjoy it. See you @ The Cube (http://thecube.gr/)

  • API Athens meetup - Pre-JSON API and Pre-BattleHack Edition

Hello to all. For our next API Athens meetup, we are more than happy to host Steve Klabnik and Alberto López Martín. Steve is one of the 4 primary editors of the JSON-API specification. Given that JSON API is coming out soon he will make us an intro to it. Alberto is from Braintree (a Paypal company). He is an EMEA Developer Advocate at Braintree Dev. They are the guys running BattleHack (It will be held in Athens too! (http://www.meetup.com/API-Athens/messages/boards/thread/48848171)) Wednesday, April 29th at 19:00 - At The Cube Athens (http://thecube.gr/)... Mark your calendars... The plan: 1. JSON API: convention-driven APIs by Steve Klabnik (https://twitter.com/steveklabnik) (remote) Description: Developers love bikeshedding. When you’re creating an API for your application, one of the easiest places to bikeshed is on the structure of your API. What HTTP methods do you use? What do the responses look like? Do you namespace the result? JSON API is a standard that solves these problems. By leveraging the power of convention over configuration, you can eliminate bikeshedding, get back to productive work, and use shared tooling. About Steve: Steve is one of the 4 primary editors of the JSON:API (http://jsonapi.org/) specification. The primary author of the Rust guide (http://doc.rust-lang.org/guide.html) as well as much of Rust's documentation. One of the world’s leading Ruby on Rails committers. Finally, Steve is an enthusiastic and tireless communicator and he has spoken at countless conferences around the world. (Tip: For those into boardgaming, he is also a huge Netrunner (https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/android-netrunner-the-card-game/) fun.) 2. Starting from Zero: a modern way to make payments by Alberto López Martín (https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=83832517), BrainTree (https://www.braintreepayments.com/) Description: In this talk we will see an overview of the best and worst cases and practices during checkout and how to get better on it. We will see real cases and a live-code integration of v.zero, the new Payment Gateway developed by Braintree. About Alberto: I am passionate about innovation, mobility and Internet and commerce technologies. As an EMEA Developer Advocate at Braintree Dev, I look forward to opportunities to demonstrate how those crazy ideas we all have in mind can be turned into pragmatic solutions. Always learning new things, sharing experiences and knowledge with others, and everyday hungry for new challenges in the tech world; testing products, languages and in general, playing with tech and pushing what can be hacked to the limit. Braintree will kindly offer the beers and some swag in the end. We hope you will enjoy it. See you @ The Cube (http://thecube.gr/) Cheers, The organizing team
