A key part of data science architectures are lightweight API's that support the workflows of hypothesis testing or applying machine learning to a data set. Notch has begun leveraging AWS Lambdas, fronted by the AWS API Gateway service to construct these services. Bryan will be walking the group through the creation of a basic REST/JSON service using these technologies and some quick and dirty comparisons to running that same service more traditionally on an EC2 instance.
Bryan Der has taken a path less traveled into software engineering. His undergraduate studies were biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Richmond and from there he went on to get a PhD in biochemistry, biophysics and computational protein design at UNC Chapel Hill. Post Doctoral work at MIT focused on biological engineering, automated design of genetically encoded boolean logic circuits. Each year in academics, he was immersed deeper and deeper into his passion for computing and now works at Notch as a Data Scientist.
