What we’re about

ASL Club of Greenville, SC

This group is for anyone who has a passion for American Sign Language (ASL). We welcome all adults who are Deaf, hard of hearing (HH), hearing, students, parents, teachers, interpreters, or any community member looking for an opportunity to connect with other signers! We offer a casual and fun environment, opportunities to get together for conversation, laughs and fellowship, make new friends, socialize, relax and enjoy each other's company, as well as having the privilege of helping others strengthen their ASL skills. We will meet a few times each month to hang out, eat good food and sign with each other. We will also participate in other special activities as they become available.

An understanding of the ASL alphabet and some basic signs are required for membership. Those in the process of learning ASL are encouraged to continue studying on their own, in addition to attending our get togethers. We also welcome any fluent ASL signers and Deaf participants who are willing to help less experienced signers improve their signing skills!

All members are encouraged to make suggestions and assist in organizing activities and events whenever possible. Any member of the group can host an event or activity. If you have an idea of a good place for a MeetUp, or if you’d be interested in having members over to your home for an event, we would love to hear about it! Please send an email to our group organizers to let us know your ideas! Most of our activities will be in the evenings, after work, however, we will also offer activities on the weekends as we are able.

Also as part of this website, we’ll be posting ASL resources, information about activities and events, and have discussion forums. These items can be found in the “Message Board” area of the website. At this time, this section is still under construction. It will be a work in progress for the time being. If you have any suggestions for the Message Boards, please send them along!

Membership Information:

Membership fees:

At this time, there is no fee to join our group, however, MeetUp is not free. A monthly fee is paid to MeetUp.com by your Organizer. Therefore, members of this group will be asked to donate $2 per event to assist with the costs associated with maintaining the group website, as well as other nominal expenses. This typically works out well for everyone since it’s a small amount of money. As long as we are able to meet the expenses each month, we will not require membership fees. This will be evaluated on an on-going basis, as we move forward. If our group grows as we are expecting it to, this amount will be lowered to $1 per MeetUp, if possible.

Profile:

It’s important that all individuals of this club are able to associate your name with your face on your MeetUp profile. Therefore, we ask all members to please post a photo of yourself on your profile within 2 weeks of activating your membership. Even I posted my photo… We’d also like to know a little more about you, so please take a few minutes to answer a few of the introduction questions regarding your experience with ASL, etc.

Other:

We ask all club members to please come with an open mind and a willingness get to know others, to learn new things, and to help others improve their ASL skills when, the possibility presents itself, and patience for those still learning. We are all here because we share something in common - a passion for this beautiful language! This is a great opportunity to meet some awesome people and form some wonderful friendships!
