Want to Round Out Your Leadership Experience in 2014?

Mary M R.

It is time to think about your self-improvement in 2014 - what will you do to strengthen your leadership skills? Why not step forward to serve ASTD Alaska?

According to the ASTD Alaska Chapter Bylaws...

Management of the affairs of the chapter shall be vested in the Board of Directors. It shall be the duty of the Board to carry out the objectives and purposes of the chapter, and to this end it may exercise all powers of the chapter. The duties of the Board shall include: establishing policy for the operation of the chapter; approving the strategic plan, the annual plan, and the budget; approving categories of membership; authorizing new committees of the chapter; and performing other functions as appropriate for the Board of Directors.

Section B. Membership
The Board of Directors will consist of six (6) individuals elected from among chapter members in good standing as specified in Article II of these bylaws. The Board of Directors shall continue in office until successors are duly installed. Members of the Board of Directors shall be President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Vice-President Membership, Vice-President Programs/Professional Development, and Vice-President Marketing.

Job descriptions for board service and for officer roles are posted on the website for member access. Visit the Virtual File Cabinet there.

Additional nominations - if you wish to nominate a candidate as a write in, here is the spot. That candidate will be contacted to verify willingness to serve, and reviewed regarding qualifications as stated in the Bylaws:

"Section C. Qualifications
Persons seeking to serve on the Board of Directors must be chapter members in good standing as specified in these bylaws. Board members are required to maintain membership in the national Society."

Self nomination is welcome: we just call it stepping forward as a volunteer! Respond on this discussion board with questions, or email the Board!

Service Requirements: Board members and interns meet twice yearly in half day planning retreats, and monthly at designated times/. Teleconferences may substitute occasionally for in-person meetings to handle the business of the organization. Board members attend general meetings and workshops for the membership. Each director and intern has a job description of duties that, including meetings, require 3 - 5 hours per month at the maximum, and 1 - 2 hours most months. Board members receive a discount from ASTD for renewal of annual membership.

If qualified nominations are submitted as write-in candidates, a second round of ballots may be required. You will be notified if such is required.

Once the ballots are prepared, we will open the voting booth. If qualified nominations are submitted as write-in candidates, a second round of ballots may be required. You will be notified if such is required. Then, please vote by November 30, 2013. But TODAY, please nominate yourself or your colleague!

Leaders do two things; they read voraciously and volunteer. As a trainer I know you read voraciously just to keep up with growth that is occuring the training and development world. A great way to share what you have been learning is sharing by becoming a leader. A great place to continue your growth as a leader is by volunteering at ASTD. We welcome those who want to help just a little-project work or those who want to learn what it is all about-internship or those who want to help guide the organization-a director's postition. Another great thing about volunteering it looks good on you resume and accomplishments. Don't wait submit your name, today!
