AWS meetup #14

Hello everyone,

I'm very pleased to confirm final details for our March event - I have no idea how we're going to fit it all in, it's going to be brilliant!

Meetup 14 will be at the Cavendish Conference Centre on Wednesday March 25th 2015, arrive from 18:30 for a prompt 19:00 start.

A very big thank you to our sponsor Alert Logic who are kindly providing the venue and refreshments for this event, and also a special draw with some great prizes:

£50 Amazon vouchers

Beats by Dre Solo2 headphones

GoPro Hero3+ camera

Amazing prizes - simply register with the Alert Logic team and complete their short survey, then stay to the end for the exciting results. You'll need to be in the room to claim your prize!

The confirmed Agenda for the evening:

18:30 : Arrival, with soft drinks, beer, and wine available.

19:00 : Introduction, Norman Driskell, group organiser

19:05 : Sponsor's welcome, James Brown, Alert Logic

19:10 : Session 1 - The realities of security in the cloud, James Brown - Director of Cloud Computing and Solution Architecture at Alert Logic

After years of FUD around cloud and security, we have now got beyond people insisting that cloud could 'never be secure'; major companies are moving secure and compliant workloads to the cloud on a daily basis.  In this session I will cover the responsibilities that you have in the cloud, and how hackers are going to try and take advantage of that.

19:40 : Session 2 - AWS Update, Ian Massingham, Technical Evangelist at AWS

Meetup favourite and accomplished presenter Ian will be sharing recent news and upcoming dates for your diaries.

20:10 : Break - Refreshments

A variety of drinks, together with mini-burgers, mini-hotdogs, and mini-pizza! All courtesy of Alert Logic, please say "thanks!" to their team.

20:30 : Session 3 - Facing the IoT scaling challenge with AWS at EVRYTHNG, Dom Guinard - Co-Founder & CTO at EVRYTHNG

In 2014 Gartner predicted a population of over 25 billion connected devices by 2020, Cisco was a bit more optimistic and predicted that by 2020 there would be more than 50 billion of things connected to the Internet. IBM got even more excited and predicted about one trillion connected devices by 2015. It doesn’t matter who is right because one thing is certain: in the next few years there will be a lot of Internet-connected devices around us. In this talk we will look at the unprecedented scaling challenges and at how we tackle them at EVRTYTHNG, a leading cloud platform for the Internet and the Web of Things. In particular, we will look at the tools AWS provides and how they can help.

20:50 : Session 4 - Monitoring JUST EAT inside AWS (or: Why we didn't just use CloudWatch), Peter Mounce - Senior Engineer at JUST EAT

Pete has worked in developer teams, an operations team, and been a generalist shipping software for JUST EAT since 2010 (with a few years doing that elsewhere first). He's lived through cultural and technological change and played a role in effecting it. He had an instrumental role in migrating the JE platform from a datacentre to the AWS cloud - consequently, we now do tens of deployments a week compared to a tens a year. He's automated systems, tests, servers, and in some cases himself. He's touched many parts of the platform and deludes himself that he does an OK job at that.

21:10 : Networking

We can't wait to see you in March!
