AWS meetup #16

Hello everyone,

I'm very pleased to confirm the details for our July event. For Meetup 16 we have a new venue. The date is Wednesday July 29th, and we'll be keeping to our usual schedule of arrivals from 18:30 for a prompt 19:00 start.

Please note: We have a strict limit of 120 for this venue, so RSVP now to secure your spot.

A very big thank you to our sponsor Aspect Capital for providing both the venue and refreshments for the evening. So, what do we have in store for you?

The confirmed Agenda for the evening:

18:30 : Arrival

19:00 : Introduction, Norman Driskell, group organiser

19:05 : Sponsor's welcome, Aspect Capital

19:10 : Session 1 - Enterprise grid computing, by Alex Magnay, Infrastructure Architect, Aspect Capital

Alex from Aspect Capital will be sharing their journey so far into high security grid computing.

[ Find Alex: www.linkedin.com/in/getsITdone ]

19:35 : Session 2 - It's all about the apps, by Rhys Sharp, CTO, Fedr8

The session will look at the challenges of moving legacy applications to the cloud. We have seen many organisations move virtual machines across and have yet to realise the full value of adopting cloud that is achieved when developing “cloud native” applications. How can organisations deliver “cloud native” apps without totally redeveloping the applications.

[ Find Rhys:  @rhyshf or @fedr8 or www.fedr8.com ]

20:00 : Break - Refreshments

A variety of drinks and food courtesy of Aspect Capital, please say "thanks!" to their team!

20:15 : Session 3 - Cloud Analytics: Manage and find your cloud's optimisation sweet spot, by Sharon Wagner, CEO, Cloudyn

Sharon will demonstrate how businesses can use cloud analytics to asses and optimise their AWS cloud investment as well as share best practices for managing cloud costs and how to provision their deployment for optimal performance.

[ Find Sharon: @Sharon_Wagner or www.linkedin.com/in/sharonwagner ]

20:40 : Session 4 - AWS Updates, by Ian Massingham, Technical Evangelist, Amazon Web Services

Ian joins us for his semi-regular spot of AWS updates, straight from the source.

21:05 to close : Networking

We can't wait to see you, it's going to be a great evening of chat, learning, and networking!

There was a question during my talk about the limit of 100 S3 buckets per AWS account. I wanted to follow up and let you know that you can now request additional buckets beyond the prior limit of 100. For more details on requesting limit increases please check out 'AWS Service Limits' here: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/general/latest/gr/aws_service_limits.html

Norman, I was one of the over 100 people on the wait list for event 16. I was able to attend remotely which was a good facility and it at least let me enjoy the information presented. I particularly liked the Aspect Capital presentation. I understand that as a group we rely on the support of sponsors to help with venues but I would to see some discussion of the fact this venue was clearly much smaller than would have been desirable based on the previous meeting size. It would be wrong to think that having remote access is an alternative to having enough places. These events are 'meetups' and well.. you just don't 'meetup' watching an online transmission. Thanks for putting together an interesting evening, if possible can there be more places for meeting 17?

Not as expected. The product pitch was a put off, however, the infra architecture detailing from Aspect was nice.

Could have been better with couple more case studies.

Thanks - we try to avoid sales presentations, and are very clear with our speakers, but sometimes it doesn't get through :( - thanks for coming, and thanks for your comments.
