Bear canyon

  • May 4, 2013 · 9:00 AM

This is going to be cold as shit.. Did this canyon this winter and there was 12 inches of ice. We may still be able to walk over the water.  If not be prepared to break some ice.

Thanks all of you for an awesome time! I just did it again this morning with some friends and a dog - Canine Canyoneering.

Turns out my friend had one for dogs to carry saddle bags on so we just tied the rope to her. She clawed on the initial drop off but was totally cool and wagging mid air. Water a bit cold for her though. But now she can't complain we leave her at home

Thanks to each and everyone one of you for such a great time. It was great meeting all of you and good to see you again Mark. I'm glad everyone enjoyed themselves in both Bear and Sundance!!

Oh, and Kevin - your pole dance in the canyon was one of a kind :):)

It was great to meet you all and we had an awesome time! Please feel free to let us know if you're ever doing any other canyons on a weekend, we would love to join!

Great time. Bill runs an excellent canyon, all you have to do is tag along and have fun.

Hey everyone - our campsite is about 15 - 20 minutes from the trailhead for both Bear and Sundance. Please plan to be ready to leave our campsite by 8:30 AM - 8:40 AM. If you plan to do Sundance after Bear make sure you bring your lunch or snack items. We'll take a break at the trailhead after Bear then head down the other side for Sundance. We should have absolutely perfect weather for this!!

In addition to the wet suit you all should all
have a harness and helmet, your descending device and several locking carabiners.

I'll bring one rope and would like one other person to bring an 80 - 100' rope as backup. Please let me know who can bring that second rope. I will also have the necessary webbing and rap rings for the trip.

I'd also suggest a wind breaker. You will be surprised how much difference that can make when in the canyons, if the wind is blowing.

      I have a 200 9m and 200 6m pull cord

      April 26, 2013

    • Bill P.

That sounds good Yashua. Bring them along.

      April 26, 2013

Bill- I will be bring extra ropes if you guys them. The longest is about 150' but you guys could tie ropes on the pull side for Sundance if need be.

I've actually got two 220' ropes + a 200' pull cord John. I can break in my newest rope on Sundance :) Of course I'm going to make sure the young guys carry the ropes!!

      Haha! That's only fair!

      April 26, 2013

Another thing - if we decide to do Sundance after running Bear, we will need two 200' ropes. You should also note that this canyon has two potential minor keeper potholes depending on the water level. We may have to use buddy boost or pack toss techniques to exit. Please make sure you are comfortable with this.

Hey all - I'm going to be filling in for Mike and leading this canyon. As Mike so eloquently stated "this is going to be cold as shit" :) I've done this one in May before and the potholes will be very cold. I'd suggest at least a 3-4mm suit if not a 5mm (I have a 3mm only, but have a shorty that I'll put over that). Neoprene gloves would be a good idea as well. You'll notice we moved the start time up by one hour. That will give more time for anyone who may also want to do Sundance after we finish Bear. If anyone has any questions at all feel free to post them or give me a call. My cell number is[masked]-6417. I look forward to meeting each of you.

Fredrik - John Butler will be posting the coordinates for the campsite next week. We'll be heading out from there. It won't be far from the trailhead. Will you be coming up on Friday or were you planning on driving up Saturday morning? The area we will be camping at is about 138 miles from Goodyear (where I live). It's about 35 miles east of Camp Verde on Hwy 260.

Sorry everyone I am going to have to pull out of this one. Last Friday in Water Slides I slid down a slide and landed in the pool too flat and hyper-extended my back very forcefully and broke my first lumbar vertebrae horizontally all the way through the body of the vertebrae. It caused some compression of the front of it as well. Pretty nasty. This is going to take a couple of months to heal. You guys have fun for me too.

I am going to be in the Sierras in Cali over this date now, a delightful and unexpected climbing road trip has popped up. I hope you all have a great time in this beautiful canyon.

You have such a descriptive way of describing canyons Mike :) You just make it sound like SO much fun!!!!

    April 9, 2013

I'm bringing my 3mm, but will also have my shorty to throw on over the 3mm. I've done that before and it works out well.

Anyone that wants to do Sundance I will plan to go right after Bear. It is pretty short.

    April 7, 2013

  • Fredrik T.

My wife and I wanna go! We're still kind of rookies.

    April 7, 2013

  • Larry J.

Should we do Sundance too ? They are right next to each other. Same parking.
