You, your family and friends are invited to join me, naturalist and Aboriginal Skills instructor Jim Robertson for an all day Aboriginal/Wilderness Skills class on beautiful private land in the Santa Monica Mountains. THIS CLASS WILL OFFER THE OPTION/OPPORTUNITY TO CAMP OUT!
Most of the skills practiced will happen at our base camp, which will simulate a village type setting/environment. However I like to incorporate a plant walk where we can i.d. plants for wild food, medicine and utilitarian uses. Will also discuss ecology of the area, plant communication, ethical harvesting with conscious awareness and integrity.
Camp based activities may include Aboriginal Fire Making with hand drill and bow drill, net making, deadfall and quail traps, flintknapping (making arrow points, etc. from stone or glass), container making with elder berry branch, gourd making, cooking on the open campfire, firing pottery on the open campfire, cordage making, soap making. If you have bow and arrows you may want to bring them (I’ll bring a few)…if time allows we can target shoot on the range.
Remember, all of these skills are pathways to a deeper relationship/connection with our natural environment and ourselves.
Feel free to participate fully, partially, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of other nature lovers and observe the happenings.
