Gunung Lambak - 11 Jun 2022

Needs a location

We never get enough of heading to this small gunung (mountain) in Malaysia for a weekend of fun and a good workout. If you are looking to join a group to trek, we are here!

Gunung Lambak (510m) is one of the smaller mountains in the state of Johor. It is a good introductory tropical rainforest trek for beginners and can be climbed within a few hours. A four-five hours round trip covers the ascent and return. Gunung Lambak stands at 510m, the short but steep trail up to the summit can be a challenge for 1st-time hikers or those who are unfit.

About The Climb
The first section of the trek is a relatively easy walk on tarmac pathways before hitting the trail. There are cut-out steps and railings at the lower portion to assist the hikers and rest sheds and benches. At the midpoint of the mountain, there is a big shelter, a water point for washing, and a good spot for photo taking with a big welcome monument.

The second half of the trek is more challenging with steep dirt slopes filled with undergrowth and thick protruding roots sticking out from the eroded ground, making it more difficult to maneuver. This section can be slippery and muddy when there is rain. At the summit, on a clear day, part of Kluang town is visible.

It takes about 2-2.5hrs to reach the summit. There is a hut behind the radio tower at the summit where hikers can take a break and have a light lunch or snacks. Do watch out for monkeys in this area. The monkeys may snatch your food if you are not watching. The descent is via another more gradual route behind the hut. At the midpoint, the trails merge. You can follow the same trail back or continue on the wider path for a more gradual descent back to the foothill.

At the foot of the mountain, there is a toilet for hikers to change or wash up after the hike. There is also a water theme park nearby but due to the lack of maintenance, the changing room /shower facilities may not be serviceable.

After the wash-up, drive to Kluang town or Johor Bahru for an early dinner before heading back to Singapore.

Mt Ophir aka Gunung Ledang (1276m) with Malacca - 16-17 July 2022

Needs a location

Mt Ophir is one of the more challenging day trek among the mountains in West Malaysia. To lower the risk of having to rush back to Singapore past midnight, we stay in Malacca for 1 night after the trek. Trekkers can enjoy a good dinner, massage, and visit Jonker Street etc in Malacca before heading back to Singapore the following day.

About The Trek
Our trek to the summit is via the main Lagenda trail.

There are 8 Check Points on the Lagenda trail to the summit with a split route after CP3. We will trek from CP1 to CP3 and take the more direct route up to CP5 and KFC (Killing Fitness Centre), skipping the longer diversion to the right, eastward to CP4.

The route starts from the National Park Office with a series of concrete steps to gradual rainforest terrain from CP1 (Bukit Semput) to CP2 (Hentian Meranti) to Cp3 (Batu Orkid). The steep and challenging sections are all after CP3.

After CP3, the trail gets steeper with the need to use ladders and ropes in certain sections. Skipping Cp4, the next checkpoint is at CP5 (Sg Segi Tiga), which is also a water point, where the local guides and some hikers will gather water from the stream to drink. Then comes the KFC (Killing Fitness Centre) - the infamous stretch of Mount Ophir, where ladders are in place to help hikers clear the steep section to reach CP6 (Gua Kambing). And, the challenges continue after CP6 with boulders and rockfaces to clear! A series of seemingly endless ladders and ropes will bring us past Batu Hampar and Taman Bonsai to reach CP7 (Bukit Botak). From CP7, the summit at CP8 (Puncak Mahligai) is a short distance away past dense lalangs and a final short section of ladders.

At the summit, the telecommunication tower in the next summit and view of the Straits of Malacca is visible on a clear day. After a quick lunch break and enjoying the view at the summit, we start our descend, which will take another 4 to 6 hours. The ascend is around 5-6 hours.

The 1 day trek can take 9 hours or longer, depending on the level of fitness. For safety and time management, we imposed a cut off/turn around time at 130pm. Those who wish to attempt this trek should have a high fitness and endurance level. Be prepared to carry a backpack load of around 3-5kg. Items include 2.5-3liters of drinking water, a poncho, a packet lunch (provided by Gunung Ledang National Park), a little bit of energy snack, a small 1st aid kit, whistle & head torch etc.

Package Details:
Date: Sat-Sun, 16-17 July 2022
Price: $265 per person
