Greetings Action Designers!

We’re excited to have Dr. John Pickering come speak to us from Australia! Dr. Pickering is the Chief Behavioral Scientist of Behavior Innovation, an Australian-based behavioral science company specializing in the design, delivery and evaluation of behavior change programs for improving sustainability outcomes.

PRESENTATION:

This talk will discuss how behavioral science is being applied to help protect the Great Barrier Reef. Drawing largely from the learnings from Project Cane Changer (www.canechanger.com), this talk will provide you with insight into how the project team went about innovating the application of psychological science to create the project’s on-the-ground behavior change strategies.

It will look why a different approach to behavioral science that moved beyond traditional behavioral economics (i.e., nudges) was needed as well as why behavioral science must be a key contributor to environmental sustainability efforts. It will cover the practical considerations of running-large scale projects, how to overcome sources of resistance, and how to apply these learnings to your own work.

Short agenda:

1. Discussion on how behavioral science is being applied to help protect the Great Barrier Reef – a case study drawing on Project Cane Changer
2. Why a different approach to behavioral science that moved beyond traditional behavioral economics (i.e., nudges) was needed
3. Why behavioral science must be a key contributor to environmental sustainability efforts

SPEAKER:

John Pickering, Ph.D., is the Chief Behavioral Scientist of Behavior Innovation. Behaviour Innovation is an Australian-based behavioral science company that specializes in the design, delivery and evaluation of behavior change programs for improving sustainability outcomes.

Dr Pickering’s work focusses on analyzing and modifying the attitudes, decisions, and behaviors of populations of people as they relate to environmental outcomes. He is the Project Director of one of Australia’s largest environmental behavior change initiatives, Project Cane Changer, which involves the modification of farming practices in order to improve water quality entering the Great Barrier Reef. Cane Changer was recently recognized as among the top 10 global examples of how behavioral science is being applied to improve sustainability outcomes, including climate change mitigation.

Dr Pickering is the Co-Chair of the Nature Sustainability Expert Panel on Behavioral Science, Design and Sustainability, and was recently appointed to the Queensland Government’s Health and Wellbeing Advisory Committee to oversee the development of behavioral change strategies for improving health outcomes across the state. He is an industry fellow at The University of Queensland, has published extensively in the areas of behavior change, psychology, sustainability and innovation, and is a regular commentator in state and national media outlets.
