What we're about

*** "Coronavirus" aka COVID-19 update;

Our Club is closely monitoring the news concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, several Toastmasters clubs and area/district events have closed down for the time being. Our club has followed suit by hosting virtual meetings using applications such as Webex and Zoom Conference.

Our next meeting is scheduled on the 24th of March and is open to in-person attendance until further notice. Future events post March 24th will remain but may shift from in-person to a web meeting, we will keep you posted.

For health and safety reasons, please follow all recommended practices such as restraining from physical contact, washing your hands regularly and by not attending gatherings if you are not feeling at your best to name a few. We hope you and your family stay safe and we thank you for your cooperation.

Do you love a good debate?

Are you looking to improve your public speaking skills?

If so we welcome you to join us at Advanced Debaters Toastmasters club. Advanced Debaters combines public speaking practice with the debate format and lets you polish your skills in a friendly, open, intellectually challenging, politically diverse environment. Our club consists of:

One regular Toastmasters meeting per month of general public speaking practice with prepared speeches, skilled speech evaluations, and short form debates where one attendee with present one side of an argument immediately followed by a counter point. Debate topics will be unknown before the meeting. One Debate meeting per month where members apply all the public speaking and debating skills they’ve learned in a structured debate on a pre-selected topic. Debate teams communicate beforehand and give speeches in favor of their position along with rebuttals of their opposition. Audience members vote Intelligence Squared style stating which side they thought won the debate and if their opinion was changed from when they walked in the room. Additional opportunities to practice will be available for those not debating.

Often the debates continue after the meeting over drinks. Past topics debated included the validity of ghosts, the Second Amendment, Monogamy, “Fake News”, Sunrise vs Sunset, whether Technology is ruining our lives, and, abolishing Valentine’s Day. We look forward to hearing what you’d like us to debate next!

Whether you’re experienced in debate and public speaking or just starting out we welcome you to attend and practice your skills. Let us know if you have any questions on the club or format!

Technology Makes Us More Stupid

Online event

The smartphones, computers and other smart devices enable us to accomplish numerous tasks with just few clicks - record and edit videos, send them around the world, navigate in cities, buy a car, track your vital signs and thousands of other things. Each of those activities used to demand learning specific skills and acquiring the necessary resources to do them. Now all of those tasks are solved by technology. But, are we smarter now that technology has put a lot more than a slide rule into our pockets? Or are we so dependent on technology to do things for us that we are losing the ability to make our own magic, mentally, socially and politically? Two teams will face off over these questions debating the motion "Technology Makes us More Stupid." Join our virtual debate to find out who wins!

Theatre vs Movies Debate

Online event

Theater plays are live shows with actors and actresses acting out a story in front of a live audience. A movie is a pre-taped showing of actors and actresses acting out a story. There are benefits and hindrances both to seeing a play and a movie. Join us on October 27 to see our two teams of debaters going over the advantages of each form of entertainment and grab a chance to present your position as well!
