San B to San G - Memorial Day Weekend Intermediate Backpacking Trip - 27.8 Miles

This is an opportunity to hit NINE ten-thousand-foot peaks in three days - San Bernardino, San B East, Anderson, Shields, Alto Diablo, Charlton, Little Charlton, Jepson, and San Gorgonio Peaks.  This is going to be a point-to-point backpacking trip, not a loop.  That means we will need to drop two shuttle cars at the end of the hike, and of course have two other vehicles to get us to the start of the hike.

The Hike:

Day 1 - From San Bernardino Peak TH to Anderson Flat (10.4 miles; start at 5960', end at 10620')

Day 2 - From Anderson Flat to Summit of San Gorgonio (8.2 miles; start at 10620', end at 11502')

Day 3 - From Summit of San G to Vivian Creek TH (9.2 miles; start at 11502', end at 6080)

Note - Charlton, Little Charlton, and Jepson Peaks are not directly on the route, so there will be a bonus mile or two added to Day 2, but I plan to stash my pack at the start of each side-trail to just run up and bag those three.

This is an approximate elevation profile for the trip.  I tried to put the red and blue markers around where we will be camping.  Sorry for the poor resolution (yet another limitation of Meetup).  If you want a better look, message me and I'll email the full image.

Here is another screenshot of the route in pink with camp locations circled in red.  Again, message if you want a better look.

Water Sources: There is a spring 0.4 mile before Saturday night's camp. For the second day, the closest water is 4.2 miles before Sunday night's camp, so we will need to carry all of our drinking and cooking water a bit further on day two. On the third day, we will cross High Creek 3.7 miles from the summit camp - in case anyone needs water on the way down.

Where/When to meet: Vivian Creek trailhead parking area.  We will meet 7:00AM Saturday.  We'll take however many cars we need from there to shuttle over to the San Bernardino Peak TH in Angelus Oaks, where we will start the hike.  You do need an Adventure Pass to park.

It was a great trip although it was cut short by a night. Perfect weather, great mountain views, pretty wild flowers in bloom on the return trail, kick-ass backpacking trail - loved my first backpacking experience! Thank you for all the help, Rich and get well soon!

Okay, right now I know three cars. Sing/LA/+1 in one car, Jessie/John in one truck, and Christian/myself in another truck. Who else has their carpool set or knows they are driving alone?

    May 20, 2013

    • SG

For now, I ll be driving up in my hatch by myself.. Let me know if anyone wants to carpool from Irvine.

      May 20, 2013

  • Mara

I really want to do this hike since it will hit many of the peaks I'm interested in. I haven't done a high altitude hike since this winter. I'm going to take the day off on Friday and do a quick hike to Baldy and down and see how long it takes me and how I acclimate. I'll let you guys know Friday night. Thanks.

http://www.meetup.com/Adventurers-Unlimited/events/113907452/ This is a good hike for anyone looking for some last minute training before our MDW trip. Bob and Aida's group will be camping with us on the summit of Gorgonio the second night of our trip, so this is also a nice way to meet some hikers from their group before the overnight trip.

This seems crazy but the trip is now just TWO WEEKS away! I've got a few updates on water and trail conditions. I hiked up Forsee Creek on Wednesday to scout out Trail Fork Spring - it is flowing, so that takes care of water for the first night. I called the Mill Creek Ranger Station to find out about the High Meadow Spring - they said that it is not strong but definitely flowing, so that takes care of water for the second day. And High Creek is reliable year-round, so that covers us on the way down Vivian Creek trail.

As for trail conditions, I hit patches of snow at 8,600 ft coming up the north side of the ridge, but supposedly the snow level is at 10,000 ft on the south face. I think we will have enough dry spots to pitch all of our tents off of the snow, but everyone should definitely BRING MICROSPIKES FOR THE TRAIL. Last thing is the shuttle... we'll figure that out a few days before the trip. I just need to make sure we have 8 cars.

Finally, I know I’ve said this already but I want to restate that THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TRIP. This is going to be a long weekend, especially the first day. The trip is also a shuttle, so bailing mid-trip because you overestimated your ability will not only be a huge task for yourself because you are in the middle of a massive wilderness area, but may mess up the trip for others if you helped with the driving. I WILL BE CARRYING A PRINTOUT OF THIS MESSAGE ALL WEEKEND IN CASE ANYONE BEGINS TO WHINE ABOUT HOW DIFFICULT THE TRIP IS.

    April 21, 2013

  • Rich O

Here is a decent description of the “9 Peaks Challenge” – the main difference between our trip and the one described is these people did a full loop, while we are doing a shuttle.
    http://www.summitpost.org/san-gorgonio-9-peaks-challenge/793559

Also, some people have asked about acclimation. The only way I know to prepare for altitude is with more altitude. Go do Baldy and Jacinto a few times between now and the trip. Some of you won’t be fazed by the altitude and others may have a headache all weekend; bring Advil.

Water Sources: After doing some research, this is what I've found. There is a spring 0.4 mile before Saturday night's camp. For the second day, the closest water is 4.2 miles before Sunday night's camp, so we will need to carry all of our drinking and cooking water a bit further. On the third day, we will cross High Creek 3.7 miles from the summit - in case anyone needs water on the way down.

Most of this info came from http://www.sgwa.org/map2.htm and http://www.sgwa.org/trails2.htm

Basic question here, is there a place we can go to look up where sources of water will be along the trail?

    Thanks,

    1 · April 18, 2013

    • Rich O

I'm still working on locating the exact water source locations along our path. I plan to give that info with a few other things by this Sunday.

Alan just got us another permit, so there are more spots open. I use a manual waiting list, so first come first serve.

I'm also considering.... I haven't backpacked in a long time, but am in decent shape. Would this be a good trip for a beginner?

    1 · March 31, 2013

    • Rich O

This is not a good trip for a beginner. This will not be an easy trip, due to the mileage and elevation gain.

      April 1, 2013

  • Rich O

A couple things... I received approval for the Wilderness Overnight Permit today!! The trip is officially ON! The max is 12 people on the permit, so there will be no expansion of the RSVP list. Also, I will NOT be canceling this trip no matter how much snow is still up there. There may be none left by MDW, and there may be a lot requiring microspikes and/or snow shoes. We can start playing the conditions speculation game in May. That's all for now.

Rich - nice to meet you at the Iron Mtn hike. I'm intrigued by this trip. I've never backpacked, but I guess there is always a first time. Am considering it!

Also, I do plan on doing some variation of this ridge hike in a single day later in the year that you may be interested in. There's a possible line that strings 17 peaks together... http://www.everytrail...
