AIP HAS MADE ARRANGEMENTS WITH GCT THAT WILL ALLOW US TO HOLD A 3 HOUR PHOTO SHOOT IN THE TERMINAL ADJACENT TO THE ICONIC LANDMARKS OF THE TERMINAL SUCH AS "THE CLOCK", AND "HARRY'S BAR", ETC. WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN PERMISSION TO USE OUR OWN CONTROLLED LIGHTING TO ASSURE THAT WE CAN SHOOT UNDER A CONTROLLED AND CONSTANT LIGHT SOURCE WITH A CONSTANT COLOR TEMPERATURE. IN ORDER TO INSURE A SUCCESSFUL PHOTO SHOOT FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS, WE WILL SET UP TWO STATIONS, IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE TERMINAL. EACH STATION WILL HAVE A MAXIMUM OF 6 PHOTOGRAPHERS. EACH STATION WILL FEATURE A PHOTO LIGHT STAND AND A DEDICATED BALLERINA/DANCER. EACH STATION WILL HAVE IT'S OWN SUPERVISOR/INSTRUCTOR. OUR OWN PADMA INGUVA WILL SUPERVISE ONE STATION AND MALCOLM KAHN THE OTHER. PARTICIPANTS SHOULD MEET THE GROUP AT 5:45 A.M. IN FRONT OF THE CLOCK ON THE MAIN FLOOR OF THE TERMINAL.     There is a special beauty to seeing liquid frozen in time, especially when a collision is involved. Join professional photographer Loren Fisher as he shows you the magic of photographing liquid splashes and collisions. Loren will show many examples of what happens when drops collide and the unique images that are created with each shot. He will talk about the special equipment needed to control the timing of water drops to be sure you capture that fraction of a second in your camera. He will also go into how this type of high speed photography works and how lighting changes the look of the splashing liquids. Being able to freeze very fast action is key and Loren will show you what lighting equipment is needed and the settings required to stop action at the precise moment needed for an amazing photo. Loren Fisher bio: Working as a professional photographer since 1978, Loren Fisher has photographed subjects as diverse the Olympics in Seoul, Korea, eagles in Alaska, transporting horses in a 747 from Germany, the 106 covered bridges of Vermont, in the dressing room with the Rockettes and backstage with Bruce Springsteen. Hr has published two photography books: “Pope John Paul II: An American Celebration” which documented the papal visit to New York, New Jersey and Baltimore and “Branson Backstage” which looks at the phenomenon of 35 live music theaters in Branson, Missouri. Crawling through the woods, donning waders in swamps and searching out what’s good is what keeps Loren excited. While he has traveled to 50 states and 18 countries, Loren loves to seek out the beauty that surrounds him locally. Loren can be found displaying his work at art shows year round from Florida to Vermont. He teaches workshops locally and at great destinations around the world including Iceland, Chile, France, Italy and Guatemala. He started working in newspapers in 1978 as a staff photographer and worked for seven newspapers in Indiana, Ohio and New Jersey, plus USA Today as a photographer, photo editor and graphics editor. He was Managing Editor/Digital for two N.J. Gannett newspapers, the Home News Tribune and Courier News and oversaw the combined website. He is a past president of the New Jersey chapter of ASMP and is an adjunct professor at Rutgers University teaching photography, multimedia and video in the journalism department.   • WESTERN ICELAND AND IT'S INCREDIBLE HIGHLANDS - A PHOTO ADVENTURE LIKE NO OTHER!

    Day 1 & 2- August 24th & 25th, 2018 (Reykjavik, Pingvelliir, Geysir) We'll depart from Newark Airport at at 6:55 p.m. for Keflavik, Iceland. We'll land 5:50 minutes later. Local time will be 4:55 a.m., August 25th. We'll be picked up at the airport and after a short drive, we'll have breakfast in Reykjavik. After breakfast, we'll make a few short photo stops such as the Harpa Concert Hall and the Hallgrimskirkja Church. We'll then head to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thingvellir is located in the dramatic rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart, clearly visible at the great Almannagia Gorge. In the afternoon, we'll visit the Geysir Hot Spring area where we'll also spend our first night in Iceland. Along the way, we'll stop at some Ice Caves and Lava Tubes on our way to West Iceland and the Snaellsness Peninsula Ice Cave (even if we see one, we may not be able to go inside as they're not safe in the summer) Day 3 - August 26th, 2018 (Geysir, Gullfoss, Kjolur, Kerlingarfjoll) After some early morning photography in the Geysir area (before other tourists arrive) we'll drive to Gullfoss, The golden Waterfalls which are one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. We'll then take the Kjolur Highland track to Kerlingarfjoll Mountains which is one of Iceland's greatest geothermal areas. The contrast of snow and ice with the hot springs which are beautifully painted in a colorful red landscape. We'll spend the night in a mountain hotel. Day 4 - August 27th, 2018 (Kerlingarfjoll, Hveravellir, Akureyri, Myvatn) Continuing on the Kjolur Highland track northwards to Hveravellir where one of Iceland's finest hot springs zone is to be found. From Hveravellir we'll drive north to Skagafjordur ant then east towards Akureyri and the region of Lake Myvatn, stopping to visit and photograph the grandeur of Godafoss Waterfall. We'll spend night in a hotel near lake Myvatn. Day 5 - August 28th, 2018 (Myvatn to Northeast Iceland, 1 to 2 hours of driving time) We'll spend the day in the area of Lake Myvatn, the Hverfjall crater, lava formations at Dimmuborgir, Krafla Volcano and the Solfataras of Namaskard geothermal area. The Krafla area has had nine different eruptions from 1975 - 1984 and lava is still warm in some places, emitting steam creating another worldly atmosphere. Day 6, August 29th, 2018 Myvatn, Sprengisandur and Hrauneylar . Sprengisandur is a very desolate and black desert that we'll cross over on our way to the highland center of Hrauneyiar. On our way we'll see Aldeyiarfoss which some say is the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. We'll also have some stunning views of glaciers like Hofsjokull and Vatnajokull as well as volcanoes like Herdubreid and Askja. We'll spend the night in a Highland Center of Hrauneyiar. Day 7, August 30th, 2018 Hrauneyjar, Landmannalaugar, Fjallabak, Hrifunes After a one hour drive we'll arrive in Landmannalaugar which features the largest geothermal field in Iceland. It's sculptured peaks are made of rhyolite causing amazing colorization of the surrounding mountains. After spending the morning in Landmannalaugar we'll take the Fjallabak mountain track that will lead us to Eldgia - the Fissure of Fire We'll spend the night at a family run Guest House in Hrifunes. Day 8, August 31st, 2018 Eldhraun, Vatnajokull Glacier, Jokulsarlon We'll drive down to the main road and head east towards the south side of the great Vatnajokull glacier by driving across the world's largest lava field, the Eldraun and the huge flood plains of Skeidararsandur all the way to the Jokulsarlon where we'll get to spend some time photographing the incredible glacial lagoon and it's icebergs. In the afternoon we'll drive back to the same accommodations in Hrifunes. Day 9 September 1st, 2018 Hrifunes, Vik, Reynisfjara, Dyrholaey, Skogarfoss, Seljalandsfoss and Hella en route to Keflavik and our flight home. After breakfast, we'll start our photo adventure along the South coast of Iceland where you'll take in some of Iceland's most dramatic scenery - on one side, tall mountains with a succession of waterfalls cascading down from the glaciers above while on the other, views of the North Atlantic coastline with its black sand beaches and dramatic headlands. Our stops include Seljalandsfoss, a narrow waterfall dropping 60 meters into a shallow pool with space to walk behind it and the breathtaking Skogafoss waterfall. After our last breakfast in Iceland and on the way to the airport we'll enjoy the Reykjanes peninsular with its spectacular lava landscape, hot springs and sea cliffs.   • WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF PAINTING WITH LIGHT WHERE LIGHT BECOMES THE SUBJ ECT

    Light Painting the Photographic Image This photographic discipline encompasses a surprisingly wide variety of styles. There are those who use light as the subject of their images, a wonderful example being the images of a friend from rural Virginia, Jeremy Jackson. His images are recognized world-wide among light painters in his genre. His work can be seen at: http://www.tackyshack.net/ or on You Tube (Jeremy Jackson Light Painting). Jeremy will use any type of light available, including those he makes to suit his needs. to create the image. And in his images, light is the subject. A sub-set of this genre are those who insist that the purest form of this type of image can only be captured with a single, long exposure. Sometimes lasting many minutes. Others are more liberal in their approach and accept multiple exposures combined in post-processing to create the final image. Another type of light painting is practiced by photographers who simply use light to illuminate a scene. Very similar to “traditional” photography except that the lights are typically hand-held illumination devices, eg, flashlights or handheld strobes, that the photographer applies as needed to illuminate different parts of the scene. Once again, there are those who take the one-exposure approach and those who blend multiple exposures in post processing. A great example of this type of light painting is that of Los Angeles-based photographer, Eric Curry at http://www.americanprideandpassion.com (http://www.americanprideandpassion.com/) ,who uses light to bring out the “beauty and passion from everyday objects.” You need to see his You Tube videos (Eric Curry Light Painting) to appreciate the sheer size, scale, and complexity of his subjects, e.g., light painting a B-29 bomber (and crew, of course) at night. If working with smaller subjects in the comfort of your basement or workshop on a cold, winter night is more your cup of tea, you’ll appreciate the work of Harold Ross whose light painting of still life images he refers to as “sculpting with light.” He carefully lights small parts of the image during multi-second exposures and then blends them using layers and masks to paint-in the light from each exposure. My objective tonight is to introduce you to these various types of light painting and show you the amazingly simple and inexpensive lighting equipment that will serve to get you started in the wonderful world of light painting. Chuck Almarez Biography: After 10 years of military service (four years as a photo intelligence analyst), Chuck formalized his photography education with a degree from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. He participated in the Shroud of Turin project undertaken in 1979 and later worked as a staff photographer for Santa Barbara Research Center, a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft. In 1982 he joined a fellow Brooks graduate in operating a commercial photography studio in San Francisco. Years working in technology marketing intervened until a move to Glen Wilton, Virginia in 1989. In1994 he started Kid Pix Photography, shooting team and sports photos in Clifton Forge, VA., and by 2002 he had made a transition from film to digital photography. In 2014 Chuck completed a Master’s degree program in Digital Photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He owns and operates a commercial photography studio and gallery (Fire and Light Gallery in Clifton Forge) and teaches photography courses at Dabney S. There are those who use light as the subject of their images, a wonderful example being the images of a friend from rural Virginia, Jeremy Jackson. His images are recognized world-wide among light painters in his genre. His work can be seen at: http://www.tackyshack.net/ or on You Tube (Jeremy Jackson Light Painting). Jeremy will use any type of light available, including those he makes to suit his needs. to create the image. And in his images, light is the subject. A sub-set of this genre are those who insist that the purest form of this type of image can only be captured with a single, long exposure. Sometimes lasting many minutes. Others are more liberal in their approach and accept multiple exposures combined in post-processing to create the final image. Another type of light painting is practiced by photographers who simply use light to illuminate a scene. Very similar to “traditional” photography except that the lights are typically hand-held illumination devices, eg, flashlights or handheld strobes, that the photographer applies as needed to illuminate different parts of the scene. Once again, there are those who take the one-exposure approach and those who blend multiple exposures in post processing. A great example of this type of light painting is that of Los Angeles-based photographer, Eric Curry at http://www.americanprideandpassion.com (http://www.americanprideandpassion.com/) ,who uses light to bring out the “beauty and passion from everyday objects.” You need to see his You Tube videos (Eric Curry Light Painting) to appreciate the sheer size, scale, and complexity of his subjects, e.g., light painting a B-29 bomber (and crew, of course) at night. If working with smaller subjects in the comfort of your basement or workshop on a cold, winter night is more your cup of tea, you’ll appreciate the work of Harold Ross whose light painting of still life images he refers to as “sculpting with light.” He carefully lights small parts of the image during multi-second exposures and then blends them using layers and masks to paint-in the light from each exposure. My objective tonight is to introduce you to these various types of light painting and show you the amazingly simple and inexpensive lighting equipment that will serve to get you started in the wonderful world of light painting.     Nubble Light House Lighthouses offer the amateur and serious photographer an incredible opportunity to capture dramatic subject matter in an artful environment. However, all lighthouses aren't created equal and we're very fortunate to have some of the most photogenic lighthouse right here on the east coast in Maine. AIP has put together a selection of incredibly photogenic lighthouses situated along the east coast of Maine and would like to invite you to join our Maine Lighthouse Crawl. We've planned a 4 day/3 night Photo Adventure north from New York/New Jersey north to Maine along the Maine coastline. Here's what we have in store for you. Thursday, June 28th, 2018: We'll drive from New York/New Jersey north to Cape Neddick, ME to photograph the Nubble Lighthouse at sundown. We'll meet ad depart from a centrally located point where we can leave our cars parked for four days. We'll overnight in the area and return to photograph the Nubble Lighthouse at dawn/sunrise. After our early morning photo shoot, we'll drive north to the Pemaquid Lighthouse (one of my all time favorites). We'll photograph the Pemaquid Lighthouse in the late afternoon and setting sun, into the evening blue hour. Reflections of Pemaquid Lighthouse at Low Tide We'll spend the night in a local hotel. Friday, June 29th, 2018: We'll start the morning off by photographing the Pemaquid Lighthouse at sunrise and in morning light.   • HITS ON THE HUDSON JUMPER SERIES - Equestrian Horse Jumping Competitons

    HITS ON The Hudson, Saugerties, NY

    We will be traveling to Saugerties, New York, in the Catskills, to photograph the HITS-on-the-Hudson Horse show. Equestrian events will be held throughout the day in several different rinks that will offer many outstanding photographic opportunities. The stables are located within a short walk of the competition and these areas typically allow open access to spectators and photographers allowing then to walk through and take pictures. SPECTATOR PARKING & ENTRANCE: Gates D or E only. Parking is free May through September Car Pooling For those interested in car pooling, we will meet at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 3rd, in the parking lot of the Mahwah Sheraton. THE FACILITY: HITS-on-the-Hudson, Saugerties, New York The HITS-on-the-Hudson equestrian facility is nestled at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, just one mile outside of the village of Saugerties. The show grounds feature 10 different competition rings, including a Grand Prix ring, a Main Hunter ring, two jumper rings, four hunter rings, an equitation ring and six separate schooling areas. Spectator seating is available at every ring and in the VIP Pavilion, which overlooks the Grand Prix ring and Main Hunter ring. Spectator parking is located off the Washington Avenue entrances at Gates D or E. REFRESHMENTS: HITS-on-the-Hudson offers four options for food and beverages on-site: The main HITS Restaurant Pavilion, the new Diamond Mills Cafe, the HITS Bar and Grill and the HITS Snack Bar (near the Hunter Arena).     Details PHOTOGRAPH THE VOLVO AROUND THE WORLD OCEAN GOING SAILBOAT RACE IN NEWPORT, RI FROM OUR PRIVATE CHARTERED HELICOPTER - Doors off shooting - We'll be using a 3-seat (plus the pilot) helicopter but will only be using 2 seats on the same side for photography. In other words, only two photographers will be shooting. If possible we may sell the 3rd seat to a non-photographer at a greatly reduced rate. However, the pilot will only position the helicopter for the 2 shooting photographers. Each charter is for one (1) hour and it only takes a few minutes to get from our helicopter launch pad to where the actions is. Participants will be shooting non-stop for about 50 minutes from an altitude of 300 to 400 feet (approximate). - In most instances a 100mm lens will be quite sufficient. - A 70 - 200 mm lens would be ideal. Since we'll be shooting during daylight hours, fast glass isn't essential. - My personal choice for this photo shoot will be a 135mm f 1.8 prime lens. - My back up lens on a second body will be a 70 - 200 f 2.8 lens - My prime camera will be a Sony a7Riii at 10 frames per second - My backup camera will be a Sony a7Rii at 10 frames per second - Now for the best part, Sony will be sponsoring this event and will lend their new and fabulous a7Riii out along with an appropriate lens to every participant. All you really need is 2 large and fast SD cards. - You can expect to shoot some 1,500 images in the allotted time. "A lot of bang for the buck." - If you want to shoot two cameras, you bring one and Sony will lend you the other. WHO COULD ASK FOR ANYTHING MORE??? This is a same one day/same day event. We plan on being in the Newport area from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Since each photog will only be flying for 1 hour they will be able to explore the area shooting the local scenery. Once we know who is coming and where they'll be coming from, we'll try to arrange car pools. Newport, RI will be the home port for this stop over on the around the world ocean sail boat race. Boats will arrive on the 9th of May and depart for Cardiff on the 20th of May. The will set up at RACE VILLAGE IN NEWPORT. When not flying, we can visit Race Village and cash in on some incredible people and street photography. The boats, the sailors, the visitors will all make for incredible subject matter. A Doors-Off 1-hour flight over lower Manhattan, Mid-town and around the Statue of Liberty. We've identified the best shooting locations around the City and have instructed our pilots where to fly and where to hover for the best angles. - You'll then return to the hanger, and transfer the pictures from the rental camera to your own memory cards. We'll also have some time to take a look at some of your shots (you'll probably take about 1000 - 1500 images) and discuss best processing techniques. You say you want to step back a bit to get a different perspective, okay, we can do that as well. A different angle. A different altitude! The possibilities are limitless. By this time you're probably wondering what your helicopter looks like, so........ There's enough room for a pilot, 3 photographers, 6 cameras and that's it. By the way, did we say the DOORS WILL BE OFF! You don't have to worry, however, you will be strapped in and have a headset to communicate with the pilot in case you want him to hover a bit longer. The New York Skyline is undeniably one of the most recognizable and best silhouettes in existence and you're going to capture it at the best times...at either sundown into the blue hour or at night. Photographer unknown, sundown This AIP Photo Adventure is so uniquely different from anything else that we or any other Meetup has done before that we've had to design a whole new and different program to deal with the issues involved and to insure the successful outcome of unique and great images. SOME OTHER PROGRAM DETAILS: The flight portion of each of our Helicopter Photo Adventures will last for 1 hour. It takes ~7 minutes to get from our lift off point to a photo position over New York City and ~7 minutes to get back. That will gives you ~46 minutes over our target areas, which you'll find to be more than enough. AIP plans on offering an extended schedule of sunset into the the blue hour and evening photo flights. The afternoon flight will lift off around 15 minutes before sunset. The best part...the time you fly is up to you on a first-come-first-choice basis. Note: Helicopter rentals are expensive and we will only fly with 3 people, so your selected time may slide one way or another based on participation. Depending on demand for the day, we will be using 1 or 2 helicopters at a time and can run up to 3 flights on each chopper per day. AFFECT OF WEATHER ON OUR FLIGHT PROGRAM AND ON YOUR RESERVATION: As you can imagine, weather conditions will have a major affect on our decision to fly or not. If its raining or windy, we don't fly. If conditions for flying and/or photographing are anything less than ideal, we don't fly. A cloud cover won't stop us because, generally, we'll be photographing under the cloud cover. Not only that but if we do have a cloud cover, the city's lights will probably reflect off the clouds creating a very pleasing glow. Since we can't predict the weather with any accuracy outside of say a 48 hour window, our flight plans will only be made on Wednesday night for a Friday flight and on Thursday for Saturday. So, how will that work you ask? Good question...and here's the answer: MOST EFFECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR DAY AND/OR NIGHT TIME PHOTOGRAPHY: Daytime photography: a. Almost any DSLR will do as long as it's capable of shooting in bursts. b. Most effective lenses are between 35 and 85mm. We think that shooting at 35mm, 50mm and 85mm would be ideal. Anything shorter or longer than this range is pretty ineffective and won't produce the best results, especially if you're a first-timer. c. Generally speaking fast glass is best and your lens of choice should be capable of opening up to at least f 1.8. At the end of blue hour, a faster lens is best. Note that fast glass is usually of higher quality and sharper as well. The most effective way of shooting from a helicopter is to come prepared with 2 camera bodies and a different lens for each body. (You can't change lenses and or fumble around with equipment while in flight.) Nighttime photography: Photographing at night from a helicopter is a completely different matter with it's own set of parameters. a. Your DSLR(s) need(s) to handle noise very effectively since you'll need to shoot at a high ISO...probably around ISO 3200. (Don't worry, noise reduction in Lightroom or other NR programs handle the noise very well...the shots above were taken at IOS 3200.) b. Your lenses should be capable of f1.8 - f1.4...can you say FAST! THE PROGRAM: Equipment in detail: Recognizing that many photographers may not have equipment best suited for shooting from a helicopter, AIP has developed the following program. We will supply each participant with 1 camera body known to be low noise and a fast lens to go with it if you don't have one. The cost of renting the first camera and lens is included in the registration price. If you would like to take along a second rented camera, there will be an modest extra charge.
