This will be a longer Umstead hike than I normally lead at 12 miles and 3+ mph pace. Half of the hike is off trail with narrow creek crossings and downed trees to hop across so FIT HIKERS ONLY please! Boots, water, long pants and bug spray are highly recommended (tick season). I will hike unless there is lightning or ominous weather warnings.
Please expect a long hike, it should take about 4 1/2+ hours to complete depending on group pace and photo opportunity/stopped times. You will see some area's of the park you probably didn't notice before.
Your RSVP is a commitment to attend so be sure you have the time and stamina before signing up. Last minute drops/no show's will be noted accordingly due to the limited spots and advanced notice.
We'll hike promptly at 9AM, so please be on time and ready to hike! For the courtesy of the hikers that are on time and ready, I cannot wait around for late comers. Cell coverage is spotty at this trailhead so I cannot check my email for last minute directions, please let me know by the day before if you are not sure where to find us.
DIFFICULTY: Strenuous due to pace, distance and terrain. Umstead Park trails have roots, rocks, and rolling hills. Distance will be 12+ miles, half of that will be off trail and there are no short cuts back to the car. Time will depend on group pace and how long we stop for photos.
WHAT TO BRING: Good hiking boots, water, snacks, long pants and bug spray is recommended and a great attitude is required.
LOCATION: Umstead Park, hwy 70 side at the bike/bridle parking lot. http://goo.gl/maps/l8nAK
WEATHER: If it's raining, I will still hike. If it's raining VERY HEAVY or the weather looks ominous I'll cancel this event at least a half hour before the start time.
Currently weather: Looks good!
This is a great hike, I look forward to seeing you there.
