(Local) Backpack Conditioning Hike – Umstead Park

  • Apr 20, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Now is a good time to get in some more conditioning for the upcoming backpacking season before the weather gets oppressively hot. Join me for once around the Company Mill Trail where we should find a few hills to challenge our legs.

This hike is intended for backpackers so I expect everyone to show up with a loaded backpack. Dogs and small children are not recommended.

We should finish by lunchtime and we can find a local spot to refuel if folks are interested after the hike.

DETAILS:

Date:  SATURDAY, April 20th.

Time:  9:00 A.M. Please be ready to start hiking. We should be back by noon

Distance:  Approximately 5.5 miles.

Location:  William B. Umstead Park – Reedy Creek Section – I-40 Harrison Ave exit.

Directions:  See http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/wium/directions.php

Please meet in the far left corner of the parking lot near the path to the picnic shelter.

WHAT TO BRING:

Please dress appropriately for the expected weather conditions. This includes bringing foolproof rain gear and sturdy hiking boots. Please bring enough water to last the entire hike, and any snacks. This hike, like all backpacking trips, will go rain or shine. If it rains look at it as an opportunity to test your rain gear!

Remember, YOUR RSVP IS YOUR COMMITMENT TO THIS TRIP and your future good standing in THOG depends on how well you honor your commitments. Late cancellations (less than 36 hours before the event) or no-shows will be noted in your THOG attendance history and may restrict your ability to sign up for future THOG events. Members are responsible for the attendance and suitability of their guests to participate.

If you have any questions you can send me an email via the THOG web site (Steve L).

It was nice meeting everybody. The weather turned out to be perfect for backpacking... Just like the mountains in the summer.
