ATT Ride - Long Day's Night

  • Jun 18, 2013 · 6:30 PM

American Tobacco Trail (ATT) Ride

Please read the following description. I'll only answer questions that are not covered in it.

It's getting close to the longest day of the year, so we'll be trying to make the whole distance this week. Try to be on time and ready to saddle up and ride at 6:30. We will be starting at one of the entrances near SouthPoint Mall in Durham. Final directions to the meeting place will be e-mailed to attendees on the day prior to the event. Due to the fact that we are nearing solstice, we’ll be riding for about 2.5 hours, so hopefully the full southern section of 28 miles round trip. It will be getting a little dark at the end, so bring your bike lights if you have them. If you haven't been riding this kind of distance at around 12 mph, this may be a bit too strenous.

For those unfamiliar with the trail:

This ride is on an easy trail, but does involve some distance. If you have not been riding similar numbers of miles on road or hardpack, you may be extremely tired, sore and/or be cramping up by the end.
The American Tobacco Trail is a rails to trails (quite flat) shady, wide recreational multi use trail. It is open to walkers, runners, bikers, and horses. Mountain bikes are recommended, but hybrids or road bikes can be used. The entire ride will be on good surfaces; either paved or screened granite.

Helmets are REQUIRED for this ride, and you'll want 1 liter of water or so.

We will gather for food after the ride, for those who are interested.

Any drop outs on less than 36 hrs notice will be considered "no show"

Looking forward to seeing you on the ride!

Lack of Dave has lead to the first rain out of the year :(

Looks like a high probability of T storms, based on WRAL. Whats the rain policy Collin?

@ Collin. Will this be an out and back ride? Sp., will you start at the Southpoint area, then ride "down" to the New Hill Trailhead and return? Also, based on distance, average speed and Sunset, is there enough time to complete the ride? Thanks in advance for your reply post!

Hi Michael, we ride the ATT every Tuesday and have been working up to riding the entire southern route down and back.

Colin, I hope you don't mind this being posted.
    Bikers' survey for Durham officials:

From Dale McKeel, Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator for the City of Durham

What motivates you to walk or ride a bike instead of driving in Durham? The Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) is surveying residents to better understand the motivations of those who opt to walk or take the bike. As a citizen advisory commission, BPAC’s role is to advise city and county officials regarding bicycle and pedestrian issues.

By distributing this survey both to city and county residents, BPAC hopes to gather information about resident preferences and motivations around walking and biking, while also gaining perspective on how issues may vary across neighborhoods and regions.

The 2013 Neighborhood Survey is available online at http://tiny.cc/walkbikedurham and will remain open until July 1st
