BEST HIKE TRIANGLE: COX'S MT+HOLDEN MILL LOOPS, FEWS FORD,ENO RIVER ST. PARK

  • February 11 · 12:00 PM
  • FEW'S FROD, ENO RIVER ST. PARK

NOTE: there is an easy option  to do just the Holden Mill-Buckwarter Creek trails and drop out near the parking lot.  BEST HIKE FOR SCENERY: many miles along a beautiful stretch of the ENO RIVER on each bank, mature forests on the "mts.", old mill site, flood plains, wildlife-maybe a blue huron + EXERCISE: 9 miles(only 1.5 miles of backtracking) with some uphills and rocky trails: COX'S MT. LOOP(elevation gain 275'-NO LONGER THE TOUGHEST HILL IN Triangle the way we will do it ), FANNY'S FORD, BUCKWATER CREEK, HOLDEN MILL LOOP(elevation gain 250'). www.ncparks.gov to find a park to Eno.FAIRLY FIT HIKERS ONLY for distance, uphills, and rough trails. Pace will be fast, but there will be stops for lunch, to regroup, and more  BRING: water-2 liters at least, lunch+snacks-we will have lunch(about 1:30-2) on a rock outcrop jutting into the river , layers for the weather, hat, maybe trek pole, camera-binocs, sturdy footware-boots best for mud-rocks and maybe some bushwhacking from Cox Mt. to Fanny's Ford , DURATION: 5 hours with lunch, stops for wildlife, nature, etc.. Looks like it will be near 70 for the hike.. You can just do 1/2 the hike and drop out very close to the QUESTIONS: send me an email with a phone #

DO NOT DEPEND ON GPS, use directions below

DIRECTIONS: I 85 EXIT 170, then take US 70 WEST for a few hundred yards to a stoplight, RIGHT at the stoplight onto PLEASANT GREEN RD. for 2.3 miles, then LEFT onto COLE MILL RD. to enter the park in about a mile-continue straight to the last parking lot.

NOTE 1: from RTP, CARY, I 40, much of RALEIGH. From I 40 TAKE NC 147-DURHAM FREEWAY NORTH TO I 85,  then take I 85 SOUTH FOR 2 MILES TO EXIT 170

NOTE 2: from CHAPEL HILL, take NC 86 NORTH TO I 85, then take 185 NORTH FOR 5 MILES TO EXIT 170. You will kinda make a U Turn to get on US 70 WEST

Great hike on a beautiful day at a fantastic park with a friendly group and a hike leader who is better than most park rangers! Henry - really enjoyed hearing about your experiences and point of view on the Middle East. Here is a track stats from my Gaia GPS phone app if anyone is interested https://www.gaiagps.com/datasummary/track/f3762e898e180b90ee439657db3c888b88a7d4d3/?layer=GaiaTopoRasterFeet

Why not GPS? The instructions from Google seem quite clear.

Make sure you check them BY my directions, sometimes hikers are sent to the Eastern Trails section or the Visitor Center. Perhaps, sometimes hikers just get gps for Eno R. ST. PK.?
