Overview: This is a repeat of a very chilly ride I led in early March, but this time I'm hoping for far more pleasant weather. The ride is a counter-clockwise circuit of about 28 miles entirely within DC. The approximate route includes the bike lane on Penn Ave. NW, the Metropolitan Branch Trail, upper Northwest, Rock Creek Park, AU area, Mass. Ave., the bike lane on L St. NW, Metro Center, the Mall to the Lincoln Memorial, and then the Mt. Vernon Trail back to the Columbia Island marina. You'll almost certainly ride on some streets you've never been on before.
Terrain, pace, and group dynamics: Terrain is about half relatively flat and half mildly hilly, but there will also be several significant climbs and descents. Riders will be given cue sheets to ensure that they can ride at their own pace and not have to worry about keeping up so they don't get lost. If the group is small we usually stay together. If it's large we often divide up informally into groups of faster and slower riders. In either case you're usually assured of having some sort of company while you ride. After all, what's the point of going on a "group" ride if you just end up riding by yourself? Although I am your "leader" in name I often find myself near the back of the pack since I favor a more leisurely pace (and by that I mean an average moving speed of 10-11 MPH). We also tend to regroup when we stop for refreshment.
Logistics: We'll pause for refreshment somewhere along the way, but you should bring a water bottle with you anyway. As always I would appreciate notification from you if you're planning to come. That way I can contact you if I need to reschedule or cancel the ride due to weather. Use Meetup's RSVP feature to tell me if you're coming, but please remember to change your RSVP if you subsequently decide you can't make it. On the day of the ride only you can reach me via my cell phone at[masked]
