Adventuring Summer Picnic

*** BASED ON THE RSVPs THIS MORNING, WE BOUGHT FOOD FOR 60 PEOPLE.  WE HAVE RE-OPENED RSVPs AND CHANGED THE MAXIMUM ATTENDEES TO 60.  IF YOUR PLANS CHANGE, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR RSVP IS UPDATED SO THAT SOMEONE ELSE CAN TAKE YOUR SPOT.  THANKS, AND THIS IS SHAPING UP TO BE A GREAT EVENT ON SUNDAY! ***

It’s time once again for our summer picnic!

This year we are at Rock Creek Park Picnic Grove #1, near the recently restored Peirce Mill.

Lunch begins at Noon, rain or shine. Adventuring provides grilled hamburgers, cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, and the standard fixins - plus assorted beverages. You bring a dish to share, and a $5 Adventuring fee to offset expenses.

The volleyball net will be set up for the ambitious; also we will once again host a “Fun Hike” and a trivia contest.

Directions: If coming down Tilden Street from Connecticut Avenue, as soon as Tilden changes from a divided to an undivided road, take the next right into the parking lot. If coming from Mt. Pleasant via Park Road, after crossing over Rock Creek, pass Peirce Mill on your right, then turn left into the parking lot. The picnic shelter is just beyond the building with restrooms.

If using navigation software: The picnic grove does not have a street address per se; use the address for Peirce Mill across the street, 2375 Tilden Street, NW. Do not enter “Rock Creek Park Picnic Grove #1” into Google Maps as your destination; it will list several locations in the park, none of which are Grove #1. If planning to arrive by Metro’s Red Line: All the usual caveats about weekend delays apply. Check Metro’s website for information. Call or e-mail Brett if you are walking, biking, or busing and need further directions.

See you there!

How do you do this "Good to see you" thing?

    July 26, 2013

    • Brett F.

John and I were just talking about the Meetup "Good to see you" button ... once you click it, do you get an acknowlegement when the person sees that you've "GTSY'ed" them? Plus it seems a little bit "high school" ... but I use it anyway!

And, thanks again Sam for the grill support!

One of the best picnics ever! Thanks to Brett and John for organizing it. And for everyone who came who made it so enjoyable and brought such a great spread of food.

Greetings all, and thanks for helping to make our picnic a great success! While watching the evening rain fall (glad we skirted it!) we have tallied up the numbers; we had 61 Adventurers, certainly our highest attendance level in at least 10 years of summer picnics.

Congratulations go to our Epitaph Trivia winners, who win 12 free Adventuring trips: Karen Walters, Mark Hertzendorf, and Ralph Watkins. (Stay tuned for for the answers to the contest questions.)

Big thanks go to Damon for leading our “fun-hike” to Pulpit Rock and Peirce Mill, to Sam B. for helping out at the grill, and for those who helped clean up on their way out -- many hands made for short work.
The Leadership Team looks forward to seeing you out on the roads, trails, and wherever our paths may cross!

Wow! 61 Adventurers. What a great group, and a real team effort to pull off the best Picnic ever. Congrats to the Trivia Contest winners--Karen, Mark and Ralph! Thanks, Brett, for a GREAT day!

Van ness gives you a downhill walk to Pierce Mill. The Zoo an uphill...About 25 minute walk from either. That is a rough guess on the walk time. Google Maps my favorite map app.

  • Jay D.

liz, not sure where you're coming from, but transit.google.com is a helpful way to figure out the metro and buses. the closest red line stop appears to be van ness/udc, with a 15-minute walk through the park to get to the grove.

Any tips about getting there via metro? Is the stop Cleveland park? Is there much of a walk from the nearest station?

Thanks for the expanded invite. I will cycle over.

Sorry Jana, we're catsitting for two beautiful Burmese and one of them decided my post was not complete until he walked on the keyboard to add his favorite number to the message!

Just an FYI, I may be running late but expect to get there by 1:00pm. Hopefully I won't miss the food?? I will be bringing dessert.

    July 20, 2013

    • Brett F.

Hi Jana - no worries! We will almost certainly have a burger and/or a hot dog for you, and A(((9999999999999999999999999I'm sure there will be plenty left on the potluck table.

Any suggestions about what kind of foods to bring? And is there shelter if it rains?

    July 20, 2013

    • John C.

Howdy, Floyd! We used to assign dished by alphabet, but that became a pain to administer. Vegetable side dishes are always popular. If you wanted an "outside the box" suggestion, fruit juices are always a big hit.

      July 20, 2013

    • John C.

As for the "R" word, Grove #1 has a nice shelter. The Adventuring Picnic is always a rain or shine event. Between the food and the Trivia Contest, there is always enough to keep us occupied if we're stuck under cover for a few minutes. ...Looking forward to seeing everyone again tomorrow. Cheers! -j.

      July 20, 2013

  • Brett F.

Greetings all! One question I neglected to include in my poll: Who is interested in having a veggie burger? And if so, what brand do you prefer? (Can't guarantee that we'll have your favorite brand, but we'll go with the majority preference,)

    July 20, 2013

    • Damon M.

My guest, Rick, would. I might want to try one.

      July 20, 2013

    • John C.

Good afternoon, Neal and Damon! OK, four people responded. We picked up a dozen. Giant didn't have "Amy's" brand, so we picked up Morningstar Farms. Cheers! -j.

Any specific suggestions about what to bring (food wise)? And is there cover in case of rain?

    July 20, 2013

  • Damon M.

Please note that RSVP's close at noon on Saturday. That information isn't very prominently displayed (it's in very small type at top of attendee list).

I'll be monitoring the Picnic page closely for the next several days, so if you have any more questions or comments do let me know!

Thank you so much for the info! It will be the three of us coming and our four year old wont be doing the hiking as it seems a little advanced for him. Thanks!

      July 16, 2013

  • Jana

    Are pets allowed, aka dogs?

    July 14, 2013

    • John C.

Note that NPS requires that all dogs be on leashes when they are on Park trails. It is ambiguous as to whether NPS would try to extend this to the picnic groves (...I guess that would depend upon the dog's behavior). However, if you plan on attending the Fun Hike during the picnic, you will need to bring a leash for your puppy.

      July 15, 2013

    • John C.

Thanks again for the note, Jana, and I look forward to meeting you at the picnic. Cheers! -j.

    Unexpected necessary trip that day:(

    June 13, 2013

  • John C.

    Good morning, Betsy!

    Thanks for the question.

The NPS limits the capacity of Grove #1 to 75 people.

The largest turnout that I can remember at one of our picnics was 50 or 60, so I think we'll be fine.

    Cheers!

Is there a limit to how many people can come to this event?

I must be in P'town that weekend. Bear Week. Duty Calls.
