Second Day @ Gettysburg Walking Tour

Since this month marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863), it is only appropriate that we devote some time up there. This walking tour, co-sponsored with the Chrysalis Arts & Culture Group, will focus on the battle's Second Day, July 2, when a massive Confederate attack spearheaded by troops under the command of LTG James Longstreet came perilously close to breaking up the Union's Army of the Potomac under its new chief, MG George Meade. Our walking tour will cover hallowed landmarks such as Devils Den, Round Top, Little Round Top, "The" Wheatfield, and "The" Peach Orchard. Our route should not be more than 7 miles long, with a little elevation gain at the Round Tops. In light of the historically-correct heat we can expect, this walk must be rated strenuous. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station to form carpools. Bring plenty of beverages (at least two liters), lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, and about $12 for transportation and trip fees. Dinner in Gettysburg follows before we head home.

All except for the tropical downpour it was a good time. Thanks to Craig for the crash course on Day two of Gettysburg. I picked up a lot of history in a short period. :)

Delightful time with a delightful group of fellow Civil War travelers. Thanks again Craig for an educational experience that was also a lot of fun. And who knows, by tomorrow we might actually be dried out.

We knew there was a good reason why we usually don't visit Gettysburg in the middle of the summer, and did we get a refresher course today. The place was mobbed all day, so we lost nearly an hour just putting everybody in the same place at the same time to get started. At first it looked like the forecast rains would stay away long enough for us to do the full planned 7-mile hike. But one look at the radar image on an I-Phone showed the storms were a lot closer than the skies were indicating, so we prudently drove much of the route instead. Our longest walk was a loop from the parking lot at Devils Den to Little Round Top to the Wheatfield and back to Devils Den. Unfortunately, a downpour erupted a 3 p.m. with little warning when we were just a quarter-mile from our cars, forcing us to seek shelter beneath some trees for 15 minutes while getting utterly drenched, rain gear or no rain gear. We dried out over a nice if arguably not too healthy dinner at the Avenue Restaurant downtown.

Even though there's not much chance of rain in the DC area tomorrow, the official forecast for Gettysburg calls for a 60% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. So be sure to bring an umbrella, poncho or other raingear. I may conduct this tour as a series of relatively short hikes rather than as one long hike, so that we'll never be far from our cars in case of serious rain. Temperatures shouldn't be too bad (high 70s/low 80s), but humidity will be back up. Bring a couple of bottles of water.

I expect we'll have an inexpensive dinner in Gettysburg after the tour is over. But in case we finish up sooner than I expect, we may just head home directly.
