Hazel Country Falls & Cave Hike

In keeping with Adventuring's unofficial summer theme of waterfalls, we will embark on a hiking expedition to the central section of Shenandoah National Park to visit the Hazel Country Falls & Cave.  The falls offer a uniquely beautiful and quiet refuge within the Park as they empty into a quiet pool in a hidden grotto-like enclave worthy of Shangri-La, right next to a dramatic cave carved into the rockface.  Our hike takes us through an area that has been victim to several forest fires, with pages of the Park’s fire history sewn into the new forest growth. Our moderate 5.4-mile round-trip hike heads down about 1,000 feet in elevation from Skyline Drive to the falls. One important note about the trail: There is a 0.2-mile trek down a very steep trail (think old attic stairs!) to reach the falls area. This might be problematic to those with knee problems.  Once we reach the falls area, we will lunch and Lollygag Dynamically(TM)before we make our relentless uphill trip back to our cars. Aside from the 0.2/mile “stair climb,” the return journey is not difficult.  There are no ‘official’ stream crossings on our itinerary, but there will probably be some wet and muddy spots from the runoff.  Meet at the East Falls Church Metro (Kiss & Ride lot) at 9 a.m.  Bring bug spray, sturdy shoes, sunblock lotion, a few liters of water, lunch, and about $16 for fees.  We will make a pitstop on the way out to Shenandoah for those who wish to purchase lunch en route.

Thanks all for a wonderful hike! It was just what the doctor ordered: A good workout, great company, beautiful scenery, and good weather. Somehow the rain magically stopped literally 2 minutes before we stepped off on our hike. Until our next hike together, hike on! :o)

I injured my back this week, and was hoping I'd be better for tomorrow's hike, but unfortunately it's not meant to be...Sorry! Have fun!

ALL- Looks like the weather might be more cooperative than we first thought, so the TRIP IS ON for tomorrow! It will be mostly cloudy and chance of showers/thunderstorms, around 80F. If your plans have changed, please change your RSVP on Meetup. Otherwise, we will see you tomorrow at the East Falls Church Metro at 9am. Great to see so many new faces. I'll be at the Metro in my black Capitals hat.

Hi David, thanks for your replay. I see 14 people are going. I would like to know if the transportation part has been all figured out as I need to decide if I need to drive or just take the metro to EFC. Thanks in advance.

Luis, we usually figure out all the transportation logistics in the morning. At the moment, it looks like it might be okay with drivers.

Awesome! Shenandoah is one of my favorite places in the area, so many things to see there. This hike is a great introduction to hiking in Shenandoah--not too long or overly difficult, and still giving a bit of a challenge.

It looks like the weather is still not fully cooperating. I intend to continue this hike on Saturday unless conditions are dangerous. Bring some rain gear and hope for the best :o) Right now, it looks like it will be mostly cloudy, 80F/27C, and a chance of showers/thunderstorms. I will make a final call on our hike by Friday, 3pm.

Ashley, while it's hard to say for any certainty, my magic 8 ball says we should be back to the East Falls Church metro by 6ish.

Hello everyone. Looks like it's going to be an unsteady weather pattern for this week. Will it clear out by the weekend? Stay tuned for more info.

I'm bringing one (maybe two dogs).

No problem. We'll work out the carpool arrangement on Saturday. This trail would be okay for them as long as we abide by the National Park Service's pet regulations. http://www.nps.gov/sh... You may want to do a good check for ticks post-hike, as there was a lot of overgrowth on the trail.

I may be called to work at the C&O Canal Park - but I should know that very soon.
